Heath Ledger, famous for playing the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, recently described one of his films as a “masterpiece.”
According to Discussing Film on Twitter and recent reports, Christian Bale was asked which of his movies he’d suggest for kids. He answered, “Howl’s Moving Castle,” and called the acclaimed Studio Ghibli film by Hayao Miyazaki a “masterpiece.”
I absolutely adore Howl’s Moving Castle! It’s a 2004 film by the incredible Hayao Miyazaki, and it’s actually based on a fantastic book by Diana Wynne Jones. It came out in English-speaking countries in 2005 thanks to Disney. While the movie takes some interesting liberties with the original story and themes, it’s still magical. It centers around Sophie Hatter, a sweet young woman who gets turned into an old lady by a nasty witch, and her journey eventually leads her to the mysterious and powerful wizard Howl.
Sophie goes on an adventure with a quirky group of friends – including a talking scarecrow named Turnip Head, a mischievous fire demon called Calcifer, and Howl’s apprentice, Markl. She hopes to break a curse that’s turned her old, but also to help prevent a war between two powerful kingdoms. The film Howl’s Moving Castle was a huge hit, earning over $236 million worldwide on a budget of just $24 million. It received twelve award nominations, winning nine, including a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards (where it lost to Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit).
In August 2025, former Studio Ghibli animators Akihiko Yamashita (known for films like Howl’s Moving Castle) and Yoshiharu Sato (Porco Rosso, My Neighbor Totoro) announced their new 55-minute animated film, Ashita no Arika, through their studio, Trash Studio. The film aims to capture the same heartwarming feeling as classic Ghibli movies and was created in partnership with Kobelco, a steel manufacturer celebrating its 120th anniversary. Ashita no Arika is the newest project from Trash Studio, and it’s significantly longer than their previous works.
Howl’s Moving Castle is currently available for streaming in the U.S. on HBO Max.
