There’s a possibility that Dom Pascal will be leaving Chicago Fire in its fourteenth season. If he does, Firehouse 51 already has a strong candidate to take his place as battalion chief. The show has seen several cast members depart recently, including Jake Lockett (Sam Carver), Daniel Kyri (Darren Ritter), and Michael Bradway (Jack Damon), all of whom left during season 14.
As a huge fan of Chicago Fire, I was excited to see Brandon Larracuente join the show as Sal Vasquez this season, taking over for Carver. It’s been a year of big changes for the One Chicago universe, with a lot of characters leaving – and Sal being a welcome addition! But it sounds like we might have another tough goodbye coming up before season 14 ends, which is always hard to hear.
Chicago Fire Season 14 Is Teasing Chief Pascal’s Exit

The last episode of Chicago Fire season 13 hinted at upcoming budget cuts and job losses for the Chicago Fire Department, and those changes are now happening. The season 14 premiere showed that the CFD is reducing the number of fire engines and ambulances available. This means Firehouse 51 has fewer firefighters working each shift, and paramedics Violet Mikami and Lizzie Novak are facing increased workloads.
In season 14, episode 3, Pascal discovers the Chicago Fire Department is also laying off six battalion chiefs. Although Annette Davis, the mayor’s chief of staff, assures him his own job is secure for now, she cautions that could change. During the same conversation, Annette asks Pascal on a date, but he turns her down, explaining he isn’t ready to start dating.
Pascal’s wife recently passed away during the events of Chicago Fire season 13, so he’s understandably hesitant to begin a new relationship. However, Chief Pascal turning down Davis might make her resentful, and she could work to have him removed as one of the six battalion chiefs.
We’re still learning about the mayor’s chief of staff, but she seems like someone who doesn’t forget a slight, and Pascal may have become a target. Given that Chicago Fire highlighted the firing of six chiefs, Pascal—and viewers—should be concerned about his job security. It seems there’s a reason those firings were mentioned.
Severide Should Be The One To Succeed Chief Pascal If He Leaves Firehouse 51

If Chief Pascal, played by Dermot Mulroney, leaves Chicago Fire in season 14, Kelly Severide would be the ideal candidate to take his place at Firehouse 51. No one else is a better fit. Although Christopher Herrmann might have been considered for the role in the past, he’s stated he’s no longer interested in becoming chief.
If Pascal were to leave, Severide would normally need to pass a difficult chief’s exam to become the leader of Firehouse 51. But, as a TV show, Chicago Fire could easily find a way to fast-track the process, allowing Severide to quickly become a battalion chief. This would then position him as the central figure of the show.
When it comes to replacing Pascal in season 14 of Chicago Fire, Severide is the most obvious choice – and he’s the right one. He’s been with the show since the start and has consistently proven himself, working hard to earn a leadership role. If anyone deserves to take over as chief, it’s Severide.
Severide has become close to Pascal since Pascal first appeared on Chicago Fire in season 13. They didn’t initially get along, but they eventually reached a mutual understanding. Since then, they’ve frequently collaborated, particularly when investigating arson. If Pascal were to lose his job, it would be natural for Severide to take over his responsibilities.
Herrmann Could Then Replace Severide As Squad 3’s Lieutenant
Everyone Can Get What They Want

If the Chicago Fire Department fires Pascal, Severide is set to become the new battalion chief at Firehouse 51. This would allow Herrmann to take over as lieutenant of Squad 3. Herrmann has been finding it difficult since he gave up his lieutenant position on Engine 51 to Mouch, as he’s now a firefighter on Truck 81 and isn’t happy with the demotion.
Herrmann clearly wishes he was still in a leadership position. While it might seem like he’s aiming to replace Pascal, he actually just wants to go back to being a lieutenant. He doesn’t want the extra administrative work that comes with being a battalion chief, but he still loves leading a fire crew.
Squad 3 operates quite differently than Truck 81 and Engine 51. But the One Chicago series isn’t necessarily focused on strict realism, so it’s believable that Herrmann could become Squad 3’s lieutenant without much surprise. Whether Pascal will be fired remains to be seen, and if he isn’t, Herrmann will need to find another path to regain his position in season 14 of Chicago Fire.
You can watch new episodes of Chicago Fire season 14 on NBC every Wednesday at 9 PM Eastern Time. It airs right after season 11 of Chicago Med at 7 PM ET, and before season 13 of Chicago PD.
