As a passionate gamer, I stumbled upon a mind-boggling patent proposal that’s aiming to create a hybrid device – half game controller, half computer mouse. The idea is to blend the finest aspects of console and PC gaming into one single piece of hardware. But here’s the question that crossed my mind: Is this really something we, as gamers, genuinely need?
In the realm of gaming patents, a large number of outlandish and bizarre concepts are proposed, yet very few actually become reality. Ranging from Sony’s idea of an in-game rewind function to advanced lip-syncing technology, we’ve encountered a wide variety of creative ideas throughout the years.
Mostly, these ideas remain ideas, with only a small number actually reaching the market. Keep this in mind as we examine this innovative controller concept.
Have you ever pondered about the idea of blending the tactile sensation of an analog stick for movement with the precision of a mouse for camera control? Remarkably, a resident from New York has not only devised this concept, but also submitted a patent application for it.
Crazy patent puts a literal mouse on your controller
This groundbreaking patent, initially submitted on January 11, 2025, was recently disclosed to the public on July 17, 2025. Remarkably, it surfaced on Tumblr, a platform typically not associated with patents, as PCGamer uncovered.
This device can be characterized as a versatile gaming input tool that integrates both a mouse and joystick functionality. Essentially, it merges the superior aspects of a conventional controller, similar to the design of a PS5 DualSense controller, with the preferred elements of computer gaming, such as a mouse.

It strives to combine the accuracy of a mouse with the instinctive handling of a joystick, an idea that seems admirable at first glance. Yet, upon closer examination, the proposed design gives us a glimpse of what this device might really look like.
To operate the mouse part effectively, you need to grip the controller’s half with your left hand and stabilize a block-like mousepad in your right. It seems that it can only be used efficiently when placed on a level surface, which might not be very convenient for extended gaming periods.
What makes this unusual is that the device resembling a mouse doesn’t operate like a traditional mouse equipped with a laser sensor. Instead, it works more like a miniature joystick, with the movements on its surface being translated into actions. Consequently, users can’t move the device around freely or lift it off the pad; it remains fixed to the center.

Absolutely, it’s important to note that the possibility of this suggested gadget reaching the market isn’t certain, so we can’t really judge its effectiveness. If it does become a reality, however, our interest is definitely piqued and we’ll be among the first to check it out.
