Approximately 7,000 metal enthusiasts have started a petition to rename Birmingham International Airport in honor of Ozzy Osbourne, the iconic musician, after his passing.
Legendary heavy metal figure Ozzy Osbourne passed away on July 22, at the venerable age of 76. Metal enthusiasts seek suitable tributes to celebrate his lasting impact.
The petition on Change.org suggests that the local airport be renamed as the “Ozzy Osbourne International Airport” as a token of appreciation for the significant influence of Black Sabbath’s lead vocalist on music and culture, and his strong connection to his birthplace, Birmingham, Alabama.
As a devoted fan, I’ve penned a petition expressing that Ozzy Osbourne, hailing from my hometown Birmingham, stands as the most influential musician ever to emerge from this city. His impact on music and culture is indisputable. Renaming our international airport after him would be an honor befitting his immense contributions.
Metal fans look to honor Ozzy Osbourne
As a passionate gamer, I’m throwing my hat into the ring to support a petition initiated by podcast host and heavy metal enthusiast, Dan Hudson. This petition aims to recognize iconic British figures in airport names, just like George Best Belfast City Airport and Liverpool John Lennon Airport do. Let’s join forces to make this happen!
In unison, let’s honor the remarkable impact that Ozzy Osbourne has made while acknowledging the significant role our city played in shaping the global stage, as Hudson pointed out.
In the weeks leading up to his passing, Ozzy gave a heartfelt final performance with Black Sabbath at Birmingham’s Villa Park, a monumental event. This grand concert also included sets from Metallica, Slayer, and other iconic heavy metal acts.
The show raised a massive £140 million for Parkinson’s, children’s hospitals, and hospices.
Currently, the petition aimed at naming the airport after Ozzy is gathering momentum and has amassed more than 7,700 signatures, with the number still increasing.
In the meantime, petitions continue to pour in. To honor the legendary Ozzy Osbourne, Brutal Legend – the cult metal video game featuring Jack Black – was made available for free for 666 minutes. Notably, Ozzy himself lent his voice to a character in the game, The Guardian of Metal, further emphasizing the relevance of this tribute.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m keeping my fingers crossed about the potential name change for the airport. If that doesn’t happen, it might be fun to rally the community and try to rename a local train station… or even just a railway cart, affectionately dubbing it as the ‘Crazy Train’.
