Street Fighter 6 Art Contest Marred By Allegations Of AI Use

In June, Capcom announced a second fan art competition for Street Fighter 6. Artists could submit their work to potentially have it featured in the game on the “Here Comes A New Challenger” screen. The winning artwork for each of the 26 existing characters was selected, but the chosen piece for new character Kimberly has sparked debatemainly because accusations have surfaced that the art contravened the contest’s stringent rule against using AI-generated images.

Through Kotaku, a user named “hoodratt20xx” compiled a detailed Google Document, outlining what they believe to be distinct signs of artificial intelligence in the winning Kimberly entry, as well as other character entries. Similarly, Galena_Bismon posted a comparable analysis on their feed.

In the document, hoodratt20xx expressed their suspicion that one of the winning entries for New Challengers 2 might have been partially or entirely created using AI. They emphasized that they don’t throw around such accusations lightly and would be pleased if proven wrong. They have compiled a collection of evidence, which they believe will provide some clarity on the issue and hopefully prompt action to investigate this matter further.

Under scrutiny due to the artwork, the artist known as “lilithascends” on platform X, decided to remove all their social media profiles. So far, Capcom hasn’t issued any comments regarding the accusations that have surfaced.

Previously, an art competition connected with video games has encountered issues regarding AI usage, not a novel occurrence. Back in June, The Pokemon Company had to disqualify several submissions from their Pokemon Trading Card Game art contest due to rule violations. Ultimately, new winners were selected to fill the void left by the disqualified entries.
