On August 24, Project Cars 3 will no longer be available for digital purchase. However, those who have already bought the game digitally can still play it and re-download it at a later time. This information was confirmed on its official Steam page.
The online gameplay for the racing series will continue until February 24, 2026. This marks the end of the Project Cars series, since its earlier versions were taken off the market some years back as well. EA officially discontinued the Project Cars franchise at the end of 2022, deciding to cease any further development and investment in it. The sales for Project Cars 1 and 2 halted due to expiring vehicle and track licenses, and it’s speculated that the same reason applies to the upcoming removal of Project Cars 3 from sale.
The initial installment of the series debuted in 2015, followed by two successive parts in 2017 and 2020. Moreover, a spin-off for mobile devices titled Project Cars Go was launched in 2021. Additionally, Slightly Mad Studios produced an unsuccessful Fast and Furious game, which was released in the same year of 2020. All three iterations of Project Cars were initially published by Bandai Namco, and later on, the studio was bought by EA in a deal that included Codemasters in 2021.
In addition to abandoning one racing series, Electronic Arts (EA) has also distanced itself from another, as Codemasters recently declared a pause in their work on the World Rally Championship (WRC) series. Despite this halt, the WRC series isn’t extinct. Instead, Nacon has regained control over the FIA World Rally Championship license.
This news arises during a period where there’s growing interest in the ownership rights of video games. Last year, YouTube personality Ross Scott launched the Stop Killing Games campaign to question the validity and morality of publishers ending games, following Ubisoft’s announcement that they would be retiring The Crew. During a recent Ubisoft shareholders meeting, CEO Yves Guillemot addressed concerns about this movement, stating that games aren’t intended to have an eternal lifespan.
