In a surprising shift, the modified message sent by Jor-El to baby Superman in Gunn’s DC Universe could subtly pave the way for the emergence of a well-known DC Comics villain in a potential sequel. The message sent along with Kal-El has been a recurring element in the Superman narrative, typically featuring different versions of guidance for the future superhero. However, Gunn’s portrayal of Man of Steel flipped this convention, altering the established DC lore and introducing a twist where Jor-El and his wife subtly communicated a message of dominance hidden within corrupted data.
Indeed, the traditional message of ‘setting an example for Earth’s inhabitants was coupled with a contentious battle cry, urging Kal-El to govern his new planetary domain. This unexpected twist sparked some concern among longtime DC Comics enthusiasts, as it appeared to alter the fundamental reason behind Superman’s actions. However, deviating from the conventional Superman narrative could pave the way for a specific DC villain to make an appearance in the forthcoming Superman sequel.
Although neither DC Studios nor Warner Bros. have officially announced anything about “Superman 2”, it seems likely that an announcement is imminent. The director and co-CEO of DC Studios hinted that he’s working on a sequel to the successful debut of the DC Universe, though he noted that it may not necessarily be called “Superman 2”.
David Corenswet himself hinted at another movie being developed, sharing prior to the launch of “Superman” that he had agreed to star in several films within the superhero realm.
How Jor-El’s Message Change Could Set Up Superman 2’s Epic Villain
A possible method for James Gunn to gain support from critics of his contentious alteration to the entire Jor-El message segment of the Superman tale could be by integrating this change within the antagonist role in a hypothetical “Superman 2”. This way, he could demonstrate how the new version enhances the narrative and character development, potentially winning over his doubters.
In the comics, there exists a character named H’el, a Kryptonian experiment with a background significantly tied to the House of El (also known as Superman’s family). He considers himself somewhat of a cosmic adventurer, brought up under the care of Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van, whom he regards as his biological parents.
When realizing that Krypton was about to be destroyed, H’el built a spacecraft and ventured into the universe, managing to survive the demise of Superman’s planet and pursuing a journey dedicated to preserving the Kryptonian ethos, whatever it took.
Due to some obstacles along the way, H’el eventually touches down on Earth twenty-seven years following Kal-El’s initial arrival. Later on, he finds himself locked in conflict with Superman and other Kryptonians who now call Earth home. This conflict arises from H’el’s disappointment that Superman refuses to seize control of Earth as a means to build his own version of Krypton.
As a film enthusiast, I must say that James Gunn’s modification of the Jor-El message in Superman sets an intriguing stage for a malevolent character like H’el. It’s as if he planted the seeds of darkness that could one day bloom into the full-fledged villain we see on screen.
In Gunn’s freshly connected DC universe, what if H’el shows up on Earth as depicted in the comics, but finds that Superman, the Man of Steel, isn’t adhering to the directive passed down from his parents?
It seems we’re primed for another thrilling Superman tale! There’s a possibility that Milly Alcock’s Supergirl might also get involved, considering she might settle on Earth following the storyline of next year’s “Supergirl” movie.
This character would bring another Kryptonian who harbored ambitions for intergalactic rule, making the Jor-El message more coherent, and offer a villain with personal relevance to David Corenswet’s superhero, creating a fresh fight without being overly similar to Superman‘s Lex Luthor and Ultra Man.
