Fantastic Four post-credits scene may be hiding an Iron Man Easter egg

In line with anticipation, one of the bonus scenes at the end of The Fantastic Four: First Steps lays the groundwork for Avengers: Doomsday, but there’s a subtle reference to Iron Man that might have gone unnoticed. Here comes the spoiler…

Starting this year, there’ll be a hiatus for Marvel Cinematic Universe films on the big screen, as Fantastic Four makes its debut signifies. Following that, we’ll see Spider-Man: Fresh Start in July, and then Avengers: Endgame comes to cinemas in December.

The latest Avengers film, released after 2019’s Endgame, is set to introduce one of the largest and most intriguing villains so far – Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr.

Since he’s an enemy of the Fantastic Four, it might have crossed your mind whether he makes an appearance in the latest film. To set the record straight, yes, but in a somewhat indirect manner.

Doctor Doom arrives in Fantastic Four post-credits scene

In the movie Fantastic Four, there are two bonus scenes following the credits. One significant scene appears during the mid-credits, while a humorous animated segment is shown at the very end.

During the mid-film interlude (directed by the Russo Brothers, reprising their role for Doomsday), we find ourselves four years after the film’s conclusion, where Sue is reading a book to Franklin. She momentarily leaves to get something else, but as Storm returns to the couch, she becomes aware of an unusual noise.

As she cautiously glances from the corner, she spots a hooded individual kneeling before Franklin, brandishing a mask – though his identity remains concealed, it’s unmistakably Doctor Doom.

It’s not entirely clear what role Doomsday plays in bringing about Doomsday, but there have been whispers that he abducts Franklin for some purpose involving his exceptional abilities.

As per The Cosmic Circus, Doom aims to prevent the intrusions and prevent the multiverse from self-destructing. In a sense, he views himself as a hero, much like how Thanos viewed himself during the Infinity War, in his own eyes and those of his followers.

Currently, it’s Loki who holds dominion over the multiverse. However, there’s a possibility that Victor Doom might be able to locate him thanks to Franklin.

Was Doctor Doom holding an Iron Man mask in Fantastic Four’s post-credits scene?

Previously mentioned, the character Doctor Doom’s facial features remain hidden. Instead, what we observe is a seemingly ordinary Doctor Doom mask. However, upon closer inspection, this mask appears strikingly similar to Iron Man’s initial suit, specifically the Mark 1 mask.

It’s yet unknown how Doomsday will reveal Doom’s backstory, particularly his striking resemblance to a highly renowned hero from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, played by Downey Jr. Could it be possible that this version of Victor Von Doom is actually a Stark variant, and that’s why he wears a Mark 1 mask?

To you, it seemed as if Doom’s mask resembled the Mark 1 Iron Man mask quite closely. Due to its brief appearance on screen, however, it was challenging to confirm this similarity.

Indeed, it appears identical as you suggest! To my surprise, it turned out to be much more glossy than I had anticipated.

In their previous hints, the Russos imply a connection between Doom and Stark, suggesting that they might share a common origin in different universes, where one chose the path of heroism while the other became a villain. Alternatively, it could be as simple as them both wearing masks, but we can only speculate.

“We can’t explain that as it’s part of the story,” Anthony Russo earlier told The Times.

“But there’s nobody else in the world who could play this character the way he’s about to.”

It’s reassuring to note that Doom is wearing his mask, indicating it’s not just another nanotech suit this time. Phew!

Or simply:
It’s good to see that Doom has his mask on, so it’s not a new nanotech outfit. Whew!
