In today’s gaming landscape, there’s no scarcity of open-world souls-like games. However, Hell Is Us, releasing on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on September 4, offers a unique take on the action-RPG genre by prioritizing immersive exploration. Unlike other games, it doesn’t provide maps, waypoints, or quest markers. Instead, players must familiarize themselves with the game’s environments to navigate the world. If this concept piques your interest, you can preorder the game in various editions, including a $60 physical standard edition and a $80 Deluxe Edition on PS5 and Xbox Series X. As of now, there are no in-game preorder bonus items for Hell Is Us. However, those who purchase the Deluxe Edition will receive three-day early access to the full game starting September 1, along with a selection of digital extras that are exclusive to this version. If you’re eager to explore the new sci-fi action RPG, you might want to consider grabbing the Deluxe Edition.
In the 1990s, the story unfolds in the fictional secluded nation of Hadea. The protagonist, Remi, embarks on a journey back to his birthplace. His goal is to uncover his past and locate his long-lost parents. However, this task proves challenging as the environment around him is being devastated by a catastrophe known as the Calamity, which has brought forth ferocious beasts into the land.
What makes Hell Is Us unique is that it doesn’t guide you step-by-step. Instead, it requires your full attention during conversations, encourages clue gathering, and leaves the decision-making about your journey up to you. As Dan Ryckert pointed out in TopMob’s Hell Is Us preview, “Some players will appreciate the high degree of player agency this game offers, while others may find it challenging and give up in frustration.” I’m leaning towards the former – this game showcases daring, assured, purposeful design choices by Rogue Factor, and I’m intrigued to see how players respond when it launches on September 4.
Other games are currently up for pre-order, so if the idea of traversing a dystopian world and battling for survival doesn’t interest you, consider pre-ordering other upcoming games such as Pokemon Legends: ArZ or Bluey: The Video Game instead.
