One thing Ready at Dawn co-founder Ru Weerasuriya would have liked to change about The Order: 1886, if given a chance, is having more time for development on the PlayStation 4 exclusive. In a recent interview, he admitted that approximately 30% of the game was eliminated in order to meet its release date in February 2015.
In conversation with The Game Business, Weerasuriya expressed his team’s desire for a sequel to The Order: 1886 and pondered over the game’s less-than-favorable critical reception. He noted that one of the topics frequently discussed at the time was the game’s relatively short length, as indicated by TopMob’s reviewer who completed it in approximately 6 hours. Weerasuriya admitted that they had to cut about 30% of the game just a few months before its release due to scheduling constraints, and if given another chance, he would have strived to find ways to prolong the development process.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share an intriguing piece of gaming history. Back in February 2015, just before The Order: 1886 hit the shelves, a sneak peek of the game surfaced on YouTube. This seemingly quick playthrough suggested that someone managed to complete the game within five hours. However, it wasn’t long before Ready at Dawn, the developers themselves, refuted this claim. They maintained that the actual playtime for The Order: 1886 was closer to eight to ten hours, providing a more immersive and engaging experience for gamers like me.
Weerasuriya discussed the absence of multiplayer in The Order: 1886. He stated, “During the initial phase of development, we actually worked on a multiplayer mode, but due to budget and time constraints, we weren’t able to complete it. Alongside Sony, we decided to cancel it in the second year, with plans to potentially reintroduce it in a future sequel. The multiplayer was functional and enjoyable.
It’s clear that a follow-up wasn’t produced, despite Weerasuriya expressing plans for “stories for the second and third installments.” The release of The Order: 1886 was postponed from May 2014 to 2015 by Sony.
Earlier this year, Andrea Pessino, another co-founder of Ready at Dawn, also discussed the possibility of a sequel for The Order: 1886. Similar to Weerasuriya, he mentioned that the need to release the game resulted in some content being trimmed due to pressure. However, Facebook acquired Ready at Dawn in 2020, but unfortunately, they closed down the studio last year.
