PlayStation’s Biggest New Game Of 2025 Is A Former Xbox Exclusive, Analyst Says

Based on sales figures reported by gaming analyst Alinea, Forza Horizon 5 developed by Microsoft has emerged as the top-selling new game for PlayStation 5 this year, with over 3 million copies sold on the console since its launch at the end of March. This places it as the best-performing game of 2025 for the PlayStation 5.

According to the research firm, the recent discount of Forza Horizon 5 on PlayStation 5, reducing its price to $45, significantly contributed to the game exceeding 3 million sales on Sony’s gaming platform.

In addition, Alinea stated that Forza Horizon 5 has been a massive success on Xbox, boasting over 45 million players across Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S through sales and Game Pass downloads. It’s also doing exceptionally well on Steam, with approximately 6.5 million copies sold as reported by Alinea.

It’s anticipated that Forza Horizon 6 could debut exclusively on PlayStation 5 at its release, though Microsoft has yet to confirm the development of a new Forza Horizon title.

According to Alinea’s report, Forza Horizon 5 on PS5 and Steam has earned close to $400 million in sales. The research firm suggests that Microsoft’s move to distribute its games across multiple platforms is part of their transformation from a console manufacturer to a third-party publisher. Despite this shift, Microsoft isn’t abandoning the hardware industry, as they have confirmed plans for a new platform developed with AMD. However, Alinea predicts that Microsoft’s future system might not strictly be considered a console, but rather a gaming hardware project resembling consoles.

According to Alinea, while Microsoft may not label the upcoming Xbox as a full-fledged PC, its performance and integration with Windows are expected to be more seamless than ever before. It will function like a powerful console, yet offer a level of compatibility that allows for cloud/hybrid gaming experiences.

This year, Microsoft is teaming up with ASUS to release a series of portable Xbox systems under the brand name “Xbox Rover Ally.” Earlier reports suggested that Microsoft might introduce an Xbox device of their own, but it appears they have changed course on this decision.
