Until Dawn Dev Expecting To Cut Jobs, Directive 8020 Delayed

Supermassive Games has made an announcement regarding another series of job cuts and postponed its upcoming Dark Pictures title. In a message posted on social media, Supermassive explained that they are reducing their workforce due to the tough and continuously changing circumstances in the gaming industry.

In order to adjust our team setup to match these recent developments, we’ve found ourselves in a tough situation where we need to initiate a consultation process regarding potential layoffs, affecting up to 36 of our team members. This is not a decision we made lightly, and we understand that it will be a challenging time for everyone involved. Our top priority will be to provide comprehensive assistance to those impacted.

According to Supermassive, the restructuring won’t affect the development of Little Nightmares III. However, it does impact Directive 8020, the latest installment in their The Dark Pictures Anthology series.

Supermassive continues to prioritize their upcoming projects and have chosen to postpone the release of Directive 8020 until the early part of 2026. The enthusiastic reception of the game thus far has been wonderful, and this extra time ensures we can provide an outstanding experience for our fans. We are incredibly thankful for the understanding and backing from our community during this process.

Nordisk Games, the company that owns Supermassive Games, is likewise the proprietor of Avalanche Studios, known for creating the popular game series Just Cause.

In early 2024, Supermassive Games made the tough decision to reduce their workforce by up to 150 positions. This trend of job cuts in the video game industry isn’t new; even big names like Microsoft have had to let go of staff recently. In a similar move, Microsoft has announced layoffs, cancelled certain projects, and shut down at least one of its studios entirely.

Directive 8020 features Lashana Lynch, an actress famed for her appearances in the James Bond film “No Time To Die” and as Maria Rambeau within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
