Ghost of Yotei map: devs reveal how big the game world will be compared to the first installment and what will change in the open world

In contrast to Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yotei does not continue the storyline and instead transports us to an entirely new region of Japan surrounding Mount Yotei, found in modern-day Hokkaido. Unlike our previous journey to Tsushima Island, this game will offer a fresh exploration experience. Although the real-world area is larger than Tsushima, within the game, both locations will have comparable sizes.

Map size and freedom

GamePro had a conversation with Nate Fox and Jason Connell, the creative minds behind Sucker Punch studio, about the realm of Ghost of Yotei. The developers shared that while the map’s size would be similar to its previous iteration, efforts were made to make the world appear more expansive and offer fresh experiences during exploration.

The Ghost of Yotei map closely mirrors the expansive feel of the Ghost of Tsushima game world. To achieve this sense of grandeur, particularly within expansive, open spaces, we spent considerable time and effort. This was reminiscent of our experience in Hokkaido, a vast region characterized by impressive mountains. However, it’s crucial to note that these two landscapes are significantly distinct. Given the unique characteristics of each location, it was essential for us to create a sense of vastness, even though we aimed to maintain roughly the same geographical expanse.

In the game “Ghost of Tsushima,” the map covers approximately 12 square miles, making it comparatively smaller than some other open-world games. However, the focus is on the enjoyment that comes from exploration, and this will carry over to “Ghost of Yotei.” The developers aim to offer players a high degree of freedom while discovering the game world, even though it may not be as expansive as in games like Elden Ring.

The developers emphasize that freedom is deeply cherished by them, and it plays a crucial role in their work. Reflecting this, in the game Ghost of Yotei, they’ve implemented substantial modifications, such as altering the narrative structure. Instead of conventional linear quests, players will have the liberty to choose key adversaries to defeat, albeit not all, since the plot must still culminate into a unified whole.

In this project, we’re passionate about providing ample room for discovery. Specifically, we aim to expand the degree of player autonomy within our game world. We strive to empower our players by offering them a multitude of choices: from shaping their own path through the narrative of vengeance, acquiring weapons in various ways and from different sources, and deciding the sequence of their actions.

The spectral entity known as Ghost of Yotei is scheduled for release on October 2, but only on PlayStation 5. There’s a chance that it might also become available on PC platforms at some point down the line.
