Back in 2016, YouTube sensation ProZD cracked a joke about falling for furniture. Fast forward to 2025, and it seems like life has taken an unexpected twist! Guess who’s found love on a whole new level? Yours truly, that’s right – I’m in the game now!
The entire story unfolds within the confines of a solitary suburban residence, devoid of any shared spaces like a town square or neighboring houses. Instead, it’s just you, your inner monologue, and a mysterious pair of spectacles known as Dateviators.
As a former employee ousted by artificial intelligence, I now find myself conversing with my trusty microwave on a daily basis. However, a remarkable pair of glasses offers an intriguing twist: they allow me to perceive the world around me as captivating, emotionally open humanoids, each with a rich and compelling backstory.
Items such as beds, light switches, and the very concept of air can all be traced back to specific periods. This thought might seem fresh and innovative at first glance, but upon closer inspection, one of the game’s voice actors had already proposed it roughly eight years ago, and there is supporting evidence to back this up.
ProZD’s 2016 parody predicted the game almost exactly
Back in 2014, YouTube personality and voice actor ProZD shared a brief, humorous video that he labeled as a long-form animation (quite typical for 2016). The title of the piece was a take on the “harem anime” genre, where all characters except the protagonist were sentient furniture. It was intended as a joke and ran only for about 34 seconds.
Now, that joke is basically a AAA romance sim. And ProZD voices one of the characters.
In “Date Everything!”, the character he portrays is not a piece of furniture like a couch or a lamp, but rather an embodiment of existential anxiety.
To encounter Doug unexpectedly won’t happen. Instead, you must remain quiet, fixating on a particular yellow wall for half a minute. It is only after this that Doug appears, bare-chested with pink undergarments, ready to criticize you without delay.
Throughout the remainder of the game, he persistently refers to you as “Dork”, despite your superior specifications. However, his taunts prove ineffective as you’re unable to escape this moniker. To add insult to injury, he also insists on making you solve Sudoku puzzles while continually heckling you.
Immediately, fans picked up on the nods, as Doug often refers to “Chairem Anime” and titles his sketches in a similar manner. Clearly, the developers intended this all along.
In the year 2016, a 100-character dating simulation game might have seemed more fitting for a Twitter post, as neither the financial means nor technology were available at that time. Due to these constraints, it was essentially a humorous imitation of what could be created within such limitations.
Currently, it’s all set and fully voice-acted by an impressive ensemble. The roster features Ben Starr, Laura Bailey, Troy Baker, and ProZD – remarkably, they foretold this entire project before it became feasible.
