At a recent gathering attended by CEO Yves Guillemot at a Ubisoft shareholders’ meeting, an unanticipated game announcement was made. According to Stephen Totilo of Game File, during his strategy presentation, it appears that Guillemot confirmed the development of a future installment in the Ghost Recon series. This long-running stealth action game franchise has experienced a quiet period since 2019’s Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, which was both a commercial and critical disappointment. After some challenging times at Ubisoft, the company launched a new subsidiary with substantial financial backing from Chinese gaming giant Tencent in March. This announcement coincides with a cautionary note from Ubisoft to shareholders regarding the risks of leaks and prematurely revealing games.
The strange irony of Ubisoft’s unexpected Ghost Recon announcement
In simpler terms, the announcement about the new Ghost Recon game seems unexpectedly casual, given that no formal announcements have been made about it so far. During Ubisoft’s strategic presentation, Guillemot mentioned that they aim to strengthen their presence in growing markets by improving current offerings and leveraging upcoming launches like The Division and Ghost Recon. This sudden mention might have caused fans of the series or those familiar with Ubisoft’s games to take notice, as there hasn’t been any official confirmation about a new Ghost Recon game yet.
It’s being whispered that the working title for the upcoming “Ghost Recon” game is allegedly called “Ovr,” and there are rumors suggesting it could be released in the latter part of 2026. Originally, it was expected that an official announcement would be made during Ubisoft Forward’s annual summer showcase next year, but this event was canceled for the first time this year. However, it appears as though the announcement might have been made regardless of its intentionality.
The irony lies in the fact that Ubisoft’s CEO, earlier in the presentation, had discussed potential risks to Ubisoft such as game delays, server failures, and other anticipated problems. However, an unexpected revelation about Ghost Recon seems contradictory to this, given that Yves Guillemot warned investors about “the ‘high’ risk related to ‘information disclosure,’ which encompasses leaks of player data and ‘premature or ill-timed or poorly executed announcements of a new game’…”, something that now appears to be the case with his recent announcement.
It’s possible that Ubisoft thought the news had already been leaked, given that rumors had been circulating for a few weeks prior. Alternatively, one could say that the shareholder meeting might have seemed like an event that would pass unnoticed, considering it went under the radar for a few days. As described by Totilo in Game File, “Although the meeting took place a week ago and has been available on Ubisoft’s website since then, there hasn’t been much coverage about it.” Given the abundance of other news, both within and outside of Ubisoft, it’s understandable that this particular event might have been overlooked. Even during the same shareholder meeting, Ubisoft’s CEO was questioned about the Stop Killing Games initiative and the influence of their 2014 racing game, The Crew, which could have triggered the entire movement.
In essence, we’ll need to stay patient as Ubisoft shares updates about the future of the Ghost Recon series. If their Ubisoft Forward event returns next summer, that could be when we get more details. However, since the information seems to be officially confirmed now, there might not be a lot of excitement for an unexpected announcement next year.
