In the world of Superman, the Fortress of Solitude plays a significant role, being not only a key aspect of his story but also part of his character’s origins. This icy stronghold is equipped with Superman’s computer and advanced technology systems. Moreover, it houses numerous robot helpers, statues, and figures that honor his Kryptonian ancestry, piquing the interest of fans who wonder about its creation in the DC Universe film.
Here’s how the Fortress of Solitude was made.
How was the Fortress of Solitude created in Superman?
It’s quite possible that the Fortress of Solitude was constructed using the tech and resources found in Superman’s spaceship, the same one that carried him from his home planet to Earth as an infant.
Superman’s Fortress of Solitude is different from the one portrayed in Man of Steel.
In simpler terms, the stronghold where Superman resides, known as the Fortress of Solitude in Man of Steel, was initially designed as an exploration spacecraft meant for teams from a Galactic Scouting Guild. These teams would use the spacecraft to investigate and survey various planets.
Across various comic book versions, Superman’s Fortress of Solitude has diverse beginnings.
In stories based on Earth-One, Superman’s Fortress of Solitude was nestled within a vast mountain complex, secluded in a frozen Arctic wilderness. To protect his privacy, he designed the fortress meticulously to be accessible only by himself. The entrance to this fortress was secured by a massive arrowhead-shaped key, which stood on the summit of a distant knoll. Given its colossal size and weight, it could only be moved by a being as strong as Superman.
On the parallel world of Earth-Two, Superman established two strongholds. One was known as the “Hidden Stronghold” or “Secure Refuge,” strategically situated atop a mountain beyond Metropolis. The other was erected in the frozen tundra. After the event known as Crisis on Infinite Earths, New Earth’s Superman built the initial Fortress of Solitude using a tool called Eradicator. The second fortress, a smaller replica, was constructed by John Henry Irons employing Tesseract technology.
Prior to Infinite Crisis, Superman employed his father’s technology to convert ancient ruins nestled deep within South America’s Amazon jungle into a brand-new and third hideout. After Superman’s intense battle with Wonder Woman following their reboot in Superman: Birthright, which resulted in the destruction of an existing Fortress of Solitude, he constructed a new fortress by hurling a Sunstone towards the Arctic North.
