Sucker Punch’s developers have openly admitted that both Ghost of Tsushima and its upcoming sequel, Ghost of Yotei, are heavily influenced by samurai films. As we eagerly await the release of Ghost of Yotei this fall, Sucker Punch is partnering with Alamo Drafthouse to host exclusive screenings of a carefully chosen selection of movies from the genre that served as inspiration for the game.
On their social media platforms, Sucker Punch unveiled the schedule for a movie series they’re hosting. The five films to be screened are “The Tale of Zatoichi” directed by Kenji Misumi, a remake of “13 Assassins” by Takashi Miike, “Lady Snowblood” by Toshiya Fujita, the legendary Akira Kurosawa’s “Ran”, and “Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance” by Kenji Misumi again. These screenings will take place at selected Alamo Drafthouse venues from August 2nd through September 4th.

In the process of crafting Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch entered into an agreement with the Kurosawa estate to incorporate a black-and-white Kurosawa style. This feature will reappear in Ghost of Yotei, along with a partnership with director Takashi Miike for a mode featuring intense, close-range kill sequences. Additionally, Samurai Champloo director Shinichirō Watanabe has his own mode in the game, enriching the soundtrack with unique, lo-fi tracks specifically for Ghost of Yotei.
At the start of this month, Sucker Punch announced that the main character of Ghost of Yotei, Atsu, won’t just be confined to traditional samurai or shinobi weaponry. Instead, Atsu has a wide variety of weapons at her disposal and can use them freely whenever she chooses.
Sony is planning to launch two exclusive, Ghost of Yotei themed PlayStation 5 bundles, synchronizing their release with the game on October 2.
