Happy Gilmore 2 Director on Balancing Easter Eggs and Nods to the Original

Almost three decades later, fans can rejoice as Happy Gilmore, starring Adam Sandler, returns for a long-awaited follow-up. This new film is packed with numerous amusing callbacks to the original movie that fans hold dear.

In this fresh installment, we find ourselves on stunning golf courses for filming, where we welcome back a multitude of esteemed actors and cherished characters from the original film, including Julia Bowen as Virginia Venit, Ben Stiller as Hal L., Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin, among others. Joining the cast this time are newcomers like Benny Safdie, Margaret Qualley, Conor Sherry, Ethan Cutkosky, Travis Kelce, and Sunny Sandler.

The narrative finds Happy Gilmore, portrayed by Adam Sandler and set to appear in another highly anticipated sequel, returning to golf after a long hiatus. His motivation isn’t just financial necessity, but also to rescue the game of golf itself from an uncertain fate.

In a chat, Russ Milheim from TopMob had an engaging discussion with Kyle Newacheck, the director, about the intricacies of ‘Happy Gilmore 2’, particularly focusing on how they skillfully blended numerous tributes and callbacks to the first movie without overdoing it.

Newacheck referred to the selection process as a “gut feeling,” elaborating that it was a delicate dance involving the right balance of tone, affection, and reverence for the original. The filmmaker also shared that, given that it’s been nearly three decades since the first movie came out, the callbacks to nostalgia have a touch of sweetness, and there’s some leeway for more creative freedom.

In creating the sequel of “Happy Gilmore”, Newacheck focused on finding ways to create something fresh yet familiar. He aimed to ensure that the latest addition would not only feel modern but also introduce something new and give it a touch of novelty.

Happy Gilmore 2 hits Netflix on July 25, 2025.

Happy Gilmore 2 Director Kyle Newacheck on How the Sequel Plays off the Original

“It Was a Balancing Act of Tone and Love and Respect to the First One…”

  • TopMob: “Happy Gilmore 2′ has a ton of callbacks to the original. What was it like working to maintain a good balance in terms of how often this installment played off the classic movie?

Kyle Newacheck said that after all these years, the recurring references or jokes hold a special sentiment because they evoke nostalgic feelings, making them even more delightful.

You can afford to add a unique touch or two,” and it’s enjoyable when we subtly reference the original while still keeping the surprise element. At the same time, I want to honor the initial creation by also introducing something fresh and exciting, ensuring that it doesn’t just revolve around the first installment.

The initial film is well-known and cherished by many, but what I’m curious about is how we can create something fresh and modern for those who haven’t seen the first one. Essentially, I want to know how can we develop a new narrative? How will this project be distinct from the original, making it feel current and innovative? This is what I am most interested in exploring as I contribute to the project.

  • TopMob: “Were there any easter eggs you really wanted to include that just didn’t make the cut?”

Kyle Newacheck: No, I believe we included everything we aimed for. In fact, there might be some hidden references or “easter eggs” that fell out due to going too far, if you catch my drift?

  • TopMob: “The story revolves around this new Maxi League, who claim they’re going to be changing golf forever. Can you just tease to audiences how they might be aiming to do that, and then also how you work to design and portray their whole stiq?”

Kyle Newacheck: Without revealing too much, since we both enjoy ‘Happy Gilmore’, I wouldn’t want to spoil it for others. However, let me tell you that the golf carts in this movie are quite impressive, capable of reaching speeds up to 60 miles per hour. So, picture a typical game of golf with carts that can go that fast, and you’ll have a good idea of how they’re altering things.

  • TopMob: “I do have to ask: Happy Gilmore 3, have there been any discussions? And you know, what would you personally want to explore if you got to continue living in this world?”

Kyle Newacheck: To put it simply, I’m not ready to jump into anything just yet. The idea I might have right now, well, it wouldn’t be the one they were looking for after a 29-year wait, if you catch my drift.
