In today’s video game market, many titles are remakes or enhanced versions; some stick closely to their original form, while others aren’t afraid to adjust things as necessary. It’s rare for the originator of a remade work to discuss contemporary reinterpretations, but the co-creator of Crash Bandicoot has recently shared his views on 2017’s N. Sane Trilogy, highlighting a crucial 30 milliseconds that made all the difference.
According to GamesRadar’s report, Naughty Dog co-founder Andrew Gavin shared a mix of opinions concerning the modern remasters of Crash Bandicoot 1-3. He admired the visuals, finding them impressive and true to the original design. However, his appreciation waned when it came to the jumping mechanics, stating that the team seemingly mishandled how jumping functions in the games.
In the original game, as Gavin points out, the length of time the player pressed the jump button determined Crash’s jump height: the longer the button was held, the higher Crash could leap. However, in the N. Sane Trilogy, this mechanic was changed, and every jump now reaches the maximum height possible, according to Gavin.
In Gavin’s post, he stated that it seemed as though the developers of the remake either overlooked or considered unimportant the jumping system. As a result, they reverted to basic jump mechanics, only to discover later that Crash Bandicoot couldn’t clear half the jumps in the game. Their response was to increase the height of all jumps.
According to Gavin, the way jumping in the remastered version was modified significantly impacted its performance negatively. He explained that jumps in the remake are now much larger and floaty, which makes the small, precise hops between platforms awkward. Interestingly, despite running on hardware a thousand times more powerful than the original 1996 game, the fundamental jumping mechanic seems less refined compared to the original version.
To give a go at the enhanced jump maneuver, why not pick up Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy? It’s currently accessible on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms.
