Given the constant buzz around AI in today’s media, this moment presents an ideal opportunity to create a fresh take on the Tron series. Particularly intriguing would be a storyline where the machine world encroaches upon our reality, causing chaos and disruption for us ordinary humans. Fortunately for Disney, their new Tron seems to follow this exact premise!
In a fresh take on the Tron series, which hasn’t had a new installment since 2010’s Tron: Legacy, comes Tron: Ares. This time around, we meet a new hero, a computer program character named Ares, portrayed by Jared Leto. However, it’s not just a new face gracing the franchise – Jeff Bridges, our original Tron star, makes a return! Bridges has embodied the role of computer programmer Kevin Flynn in every single Tron movie to date.
You can see Bridges back in action in the new Tron: Ares trailer below:
There’s a new poster for the film as well:
It strikes me as an unusual concept, developing indestructible computer programs resembling rock band leaders. Frankly, many advancements in AI that I come across seem questionable to me, yet they continue to materialize. Perhaps the film Tron: Ares will be hailed as the most visionary sci-fi production of 2025 due to this very reason. Notably, it retains the stunning aesthetic of Tron: Legacy, featuring armored computer programs with their glowing weaponry and lightcycles.
Here is the film’s official synopsis:
As a devotee, I’d express it like this: “In ‘TRON: Ares,’ I find myself as a complex digital entity named Ares, dispatched from the digital realm into our physical world on a perilous quest. This mission, for the first time in history, brings human beings face-to-face with artificially intelligent beings.
Tron: Ares is scheduled to open in theaters on October 10.
The Weirdest Character Posters of 2024
Argylle
As a film enthusiast, let me share my thoughts on this spy thriller that seemed to prioritize unusual feline advertising. The character poster gives off an impression that Argylle is not just another agent but rather a grouchy housecat. If you happened to watch Argylle expecting a heartwarming cat movie, you were met with a disappointingly unconvincing CGI feline being carted around in a backpack.
Madame Web
In the midst of all the excitement, I can’t help but wonder about the perplexity this web-slinger-like figure stirred up. Having delved into almost every Spider-Man comic book, I must admit that I too was left in a state of bewilderment by it. Who on earth could this mysterious character be? (As it turns out, he was Ezekiel – a character from the Spider-Man comics, who had never before donned anything resembling such an unconventional costume.)
Dune: Part Two
An intriguing aspect of character poster trends is when actors with limited on-screen presence are featured prominently. For instance, Lea Seydoux has a screen time of around six to eight minutes in “Dune: Part Two”, yet she still graced the cover as a leading character (although her face is barely visible, which is a different topic).
Dune: Part Two
I really enjoyed “Dune: Part Two,” but the poster is spooky enough to make you hesitate about going to watch it. So, Stellan Skarsgård, look away!
Kung Fu Panda 4
In the world of Kung Fu Panda, most of the other characters like Po, Master Shifu, Li Shan, and Mr. Ping each have unique names. However, Viola Davis’ chameleon character in Kung Fu Panda 4 is simply referred to as The Chameleon. It’s a bit disappointing that Sony didn’t promote Kraven the Hunter more; it would have been exciting to have two separate posters featuring characters named The Chameleon from different movies released within the same year.
The Fall Guy
To be fair, after watching “The Fall Guy,” it becomes clear that the dog is, in fact, the real leading actor in the movie. It’s amusing to notice that even he has an action pose featured on a poster all his own – The Canine Star!

IF
If the movie “IF” had an unusual collection of character posters, it was filled with almost every speaking character, including the peculiar imaginary friends and numerous cameos by small, easily missed celebrities. John Krasinski, who played the main (human) character’s father and also wrote and directed the film, naturally received his own character poster. Although everything about “IF” is strange, I find the imaginary friend particularly perplexing – a marshmallow that’s always melting? It’s hard to imagine a child coming up with such a peculiar creature, who seemingly lives in constant torment! My children had many questions about this character when we saw their poster in a theater earlier this year.
IF
George Clooney’s character poster for the movie “IF” is particularly amusing. In fact, if you happened upon it without knowing the context, you might be puzzled and exclaim something like, “Hold on, did they create an animated follow-up to Gravity?
IF
As a movie buff, I can’t help but notice the quirky taglines that adorn each poster for the film “IF”. These catchphrases often delve into adult humor or pop culture references that may go over the heads of the intended audience. For instance, trying to explain the term ‘thirst trap’ to a child after they read it on one of these posters could be quite the challenge. You’d end up saying something like, “Well, sweetheart, it means he’s like a water glass. If you ever feel thirsty… well, he would trap you into wanting more water.” It’s definitely an interesting conversation to have!
The Garfield Movie
To be honest, I don’t find any joke in “The Garfield Movie” as amusing as the promotional poster for the film featuring Snoop Dogg as simply “A Cat.
Borderlands
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but notice the striking resemblance to its video game origins this piece has. Yet, the captivating facial expression showcased by Ariana Greenblatt in her Borderlands character poster is truly an exceptional choice.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
In the upcoming sequel of “Beetlejuice,” you might be excited to see some familiar faces reprising their roles. However, one character who won’t be making a return is the guy with the shrunken head. In the original movie, this character wasn’t a significant figure; he was more of a visual joke in the afterlife’s holding area. Furthermore, the phrase “Bob is a Shrinker” seems to be teetering on the edge of being as intriguing as “Zendaya Is Meechee.
Joker: Folie à Deux
It’s clearly suggested that you should design a character poster for Lady Gaga for the movie “Joker: Folie à Deux”. However, what’s puzzling is that the title of the movie doesn’t appear on the poster. Instead, it’s just an image of Lady Gaga with unusual eye makeup. Is she releasing a new album in October 2nd? Has she made an artistic autobiography about her life? What exactly are we promoting here?
Venom: The Last Dance
In the list I’ve compiled, I’ve primarily focused on American movie posters, but I had to make an exception for the hilarious Stephen Graham character poster from “Venom: The Last Dance”. It’s amusing because you wouldn’t expect a character poster for this film. His character is named Patrick Mulligan, and yes, he was also in “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” – a fact I had forgotten! Excitingly, he’s back in the sequel, and his role is quite minimal – only a couple of scenes set within a jail cell. Don’t forget to catch him on the big screen this fall!
Red One
In the movie titled “Red One,” Dwayne Johnson, more famously known as The Rock, is portrayed as a character named Callum Drift. Now, isn’t that surprising? I thought The Rock was just a nickname for him! Anyway, “Red One” appears to be a Christmas movie, but it’s not your typical Santa Claus story. Instead, the plot revolves around Santa’s top bodyguard, Callum Drift, who must track down Old Saint Nick after he gets kidnapped. That’s an interesting twist, isn’t it?
But here’s something even more intriguing: Callum Drift has a glowing bracelet on his arm. This device allows him to shrink and grow like Ant-Man, which seems quite unusual. I wonder why that is! If you’re curious about the other characters in “Red One,” I suggest you take a look at all the character posters. They’re all quite impressive.
Wicked
Gladiator II
In the marketing strategy for “Gladiator II”, the character posters adopted a more creative approach by only showing half of the actors’ faces. While this design might be intriguing, it can be challenging to identify some lesser-known actors, making it difficult to discern who they are or their roles in the film. For instance, Fred Hechinger is one of the two emperors of Rome in the movie, yet his face and costume are so minimally displayed that it’s hard to recognize him from this poster, which primarily features a blue curtain.
Mufasa: The Lion King
Disney released a collection of character posters for “Mufasa: The Lion King”, featuring various characters such as Zazu and Kiara. Each poster follows a similar format, displaying the character’s name at the top and the movie title at the bottom. However, Mufasa also got his own poster, which is somewhat unusual. His poster reads “Mufasa” at the top, followed by an image of Mufasa himself, and then the title “Mufasa: The Lion King” below. Interestingly, the top name doesn’t specify who is playing Mufasa, giving the impression that Mufasa the lion might be a self-centered character demanding multiple billings on his own poster.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Instead of focusing on the well-known characters like Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, or Dr. Robotnik, it’s actually James Marsden who draws the kids to the Sonic movies. They simply can’t get enough of him and find him extremely attractive.
