In the year 2025, the movie landscape has been dominated by the rebellious benevolence of Superman, a transformation largely due to James Gunn, who surprisingly agreed to direct. Gunn’s association with the project was long predicted, and the journey to this point, marked by his dismissal and reinstatement from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, is quite an intriguing tale. Remarkably, some aspects of this story were unknown even to Gunn himself until he shared them in a recent interview.
James Gunn Was Asked Back To Marvel… Right After He Accepted His First DC Movie
Discussing with Dax Shepard on his “Armchair Expert” podcast, the co-CEO of DC Films began by discussing his current role, and he did so by narrating how he previously lost a similar position. In the initial phase of his tale, Gunn described how he found himself in Warner Bros.’ comic universe to begin with.
Toby Emmerich from Warner Bros approached me with a proposition; he asked, “James Gunn’s Superman?”, to which I replied, “I’m not sure about that.” Then he suggested, “What about Suicide Squad?” Inspired by this idea, I developed a concept, pitched it to them, and they agreed, saying, “Let’s move forward with it.
Discovering that Mr. Gunn originally declined the offer for Superman adds depth to this narrative overall, and so does the information that the director behind the Guardians trilogy was allowed to complete his arc within the MCU. However, this twist also brings about a significant implication, as Alan Horn, who was the chairman of Walt Disney Studios at the time of the dismissal, desired Gunn’s return.
Without a doubt, I returned home and received a call. It was Alan Horn on the line, who mentioned, “James, there’s a possibility you might drop by tomorrow?” He expressed his intention to rehire me. To which I replied, “I’ll need to discuss this with Kevin first.
With a reliable advisor or partner by his side once again, it was now fitting for Kevin Feige to engage with the other party. While some may view his words as foreshadowing, I believe there were different forces in motion.

Kevin Feige’s Superman Crack Might Have Come From Some Personal DC Knowledge
During the course of his presentation, James Gunn was reminded of a detail from his meeting with Kevin Feige that he hadn’t shared before. He decided to take us back to that conversation, sharing more about his past and future boss who is famous for creating Creature Commandos, by saying: “At this moment, something from our previous meeting came back to me, and I felt compelled to share it with you now.
Initially, I visited Kevin’s place, whereupon he exclaimed, ‘This is fantastic! This is great! Exactly what I had in mind.’ To which I responded, ‘Yes, it’s good, but there are other tasks I must attend to first.’ Later, Kevin queried, ‘Are you working on Superman?’ To which I replied, ‘No, I’m going to work on a Suicide Squad sequel,’ leaving him astonished.
It seems to me that since DC had previously attempted to hire Kevin Feige before settling on the writer/director of Superman, it’s not entirely unreasonable to think that Superman was destined to be the cornerstone of the new DC Universe. There may have been an unspoken understanding or hint for the head of Marvel Studios to believe that James Gunn would revive Metropolis’ symbol of truth and justice.

Without a doubt, they might have kept such details to themselves, but fortunately for us fans, the tale concluded grandly with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 delivering an emotional victory.
