As FX’s Alien: Earth debuts on August 12, longtime enthusiasts might find themselves on tenterhooks, eagerly anticipating their initial glimpse of the Xenomorph. Upon seeing it, they may be pleasantly surprised to learn that the legendary creature was created using only practical effects, as revealed by the show’s director of photography, Dana Gonzales, in a roundtable discussion with TopMob.
He asserted that what they created was completely authentic, emphasizing their unique method of portraying the Xenomorph without relying on computer-generated imagery. Even in “Aliens,” he noted, there was a significant amount of CGI used, but for this project, they are not utilizing any CGI representation of the Xenomorph.
The Xenomorph isn’t the only creature that will be made realistic using practical methods, as Gonzales confirmed, “All of our Facehuggers are actual and genuine.
He mentioned that there are various Facehuggers, each performing distinct functions, based on some models I observed during a studio tour. Some of these models have animatronic components, while others serve as prosthetics. The impressive aspect is that Wētā Workshop constructed characters capable of multiple tasks effectively, which means they can remain on screen for longer periods. Even the eggs are quite advanced in design.
Gonzales shared that the upcoming movie, Alien: Earth, will have significantly more Xenomorph action compared to previous films in the series. I was curious about how they plan to maintain the intensity of these scenes since the earlier films often built suspense by keeping the creature out of sight or minimally displayed.
He expressed his belief that what we created is extremely captivating for photography, both intimidating and intricately detailed. He questioned if some of the earlier movies incorporated the larger stunt techniques we use today, such as wire work and the ability to maneuver the Xeno in mid-air. Instead of relying on jump scares, this creation is dynamic, flying through the air, pursuing you. This adds a layer of realism that he doubts was present in those films.
