Guild Gaming has unveiled the victor of their women-focused gaming murals contest, and her masterpiece is already dominating the skyline in Shoreditch.
Thirty-one-year-old artist Melanie Virot, residing in Bristol, claimed the first place with her lively, anime-inspired artwork gracing the façade of the Sky Guild Gaming Center, situated opposite Shoreditch High Street station.
The mural depicts women in gaming as a vibrant visual tribute, showcasing expressive female players alongside their game characters, including role indicators, health bars, and the lively action you’d find in actual play. For her successful entry, Virot receives £2,000 and gets added to Guild’s list of creative freelancers.
In her words, gaming provides a platform for women to truly showcase their individuality, as Melanie explained. She envisioned every character to exude confidence, originality, and undaunted activity – flourishing within the sphere they occupy.
The mural contest was a component of “The Lobby,” an ongoing project by Sky Broadband that promotes and highlights women in the gaming community within the UK. Alongside Mélaine, Emily Walton and Kimberley Uguru were recognized as distinguished finalists for their exceptional entries, earning each of them £500 in prize money.
A diverse group of women representing various sectors within the industry, such as Talia Mar, Eneni Bambara-Abban (Anime & Chill), and representatives from Sky and The Guild, were the ones who selected the award recipients.
Merika Vine, from Guild’s Partnership department, stated that The Lobby is all about acknowledging and strengthening women in the gaming world. Mélaine’s work truly embodies this ethos elegantly.
More Than a Mural: What’s Next for The Lobby
The mural is just one part of The Lobby, a multi-part programme that includes:
The Lobby League – A competitive circuit with a £50,000 prize pool spread across four major titles
The Lobby Live – In-person community events hosted at the Sky Guild Gaming Centre
The Lobby Studio: A venue providing advanced live-streaming environments and resources, empowering emerging female content creators to advance their skills.
