When asked by The Hollywood Reporter about when she discovered her character Riri Williams would be interacting with Mephisto, actress Dominique Thorne replied:

It wasn’t until we began filming that I realized he would be present. At that point in our production, we had reached the final stages, definitely a winding down phase. Throughout the entire shoot, we used pseudonyms. We discussed Dormammu extensively and primarily focused on him, but it wasn’t until we were preparing to film the scene with Sasha Baron Cohen that I discovered his identity.

In the challenging world of acting, I find it hard to fathom performing a crucial scene like Riri’s with Mephisto without first understanding who my character is interacting with and what their abilities are. At least she wasn’t under the impression that she was confronting an ordinary villain. The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever actress knew she was dealing with a troublesome sorcerer, just not realizing it wouldn’t be Dormammu in this case.

Given that fans have speculated about Mephisto’s appearance for around four years, there might have been increased pressure and anxiety when Riri was confirmed to face him. When asked about this, the actress responded:

I don’t believe that to be the case. Instead, I suspect that Marvel’s policy of keeping things under wraps played a significant role in these changes. They wanted to maintain control over details to prevent any leaks or mishaps. With countless individuals involved on set, adjustments to characters are understandable. Some of my co-stars shared with me that they didn’t even know the characters they were auditioning for. The scripts provided during the auditions had fictitious names and storylines, so such alterations aren’t surprising.

In essence, it’s important to acknowledge that for individuals who are accustomed to roles in productions like Ironheart and other Marvel series or films, this level of secrecy is typical. However, for most people, maintaining such extreme confidentiality might be a significant hurdle.
