To date, the DC Comics’ series titled “Absolute Universe” have operated independently. While there have been occasional nods to other storylines, such as referencing Gateway City from Absolute Wonder Woman in Absolute Flash, no actual interactions or team-ups between the superheroes and villains have occurred. This October, that changes with the debut of Absolute Evil #1, where the Absolute Joker will assemble a formidable group of villains.
The concept of the unpredictable Joker organizing a structured group could surprise casual superhero enthusiasts. Yet, it fits seamlessly within the twisted realities of the Absolute Universe, where DC Comics characters undergo unexpected transformations. In this scenario, the villain from the Absolute Batman universe is a billionaire shrouded in mystery, devoid of any humor whatsoever.
The motives behind the Joker’s actions remain unclear, yet it is known that he has been involved in establishing hidden facilities – often referred to as “arks” – in international waters. One such facility, Ark M, was constructed near the shores of Gotham City.
What villains are part of Absolute Joker’s supervillain group?
As a devoted cinephile, I’m intrigued by the captivating cover art for Absolute Evil #1. It depicts seven enigmatic hands intertwined, yet not all are immediately recognizable. To make matters even more intriguing, this new supervillain team is set to introduce two characters who will debut in the Absolute Universe for the first time within this one-shot issue. However, the identities of the remaining four villains, excluding the Joker, have been confirmed.
Ra’s Al Ghul
In comparison to his character in the Earth-Prime universe, the primary antagonist of Absolute Superman, Ra’s Al Ghul, is a merciless and formidable figure. As leader of the Lazarus Corporation, this Ra’s aspires to establish global dominion through an oligarchic system. Moreover, he harbors ambitions to make Kal-El, the last son of Krypton, his successor.
Veronica Cale
In the world known as Earth-Prime, Veronica Cale was a self-made business leader who found it frustrating that Wonder Woman was often celebrated as a symbol of feminism over herself. It appears that her counterpart in the realm of Absolute Evil shares this same sentiment towards the Amazing Amazon. However, instead of being a critic, she serves as an advisor to the President of the United States and heads an undisclosed department. Her influence seems to be on par with Earth-Prime’s Amanda Waller.
Hector Hammond
In a different context, the original Hector Hammond was a small-time criminal who gained psychic abilities after coming into contact with an extraterrestrial meteorite. On the other hand, the Hector Hammond from the Absolute Universe is a ruthless billionaire exploiting alien sightings in Evergreen City for personal gain. At this point, he doesn’t appear to have special powers, but it seems plausible that his experiences during Absolute Green Lantern will lead to some sort of transformation.
Dr. Elenore Thawne
In the original storyline, Eobard Thawne was known as the Reverse-Flash and a longtime adversary of Barry Allen. However, in this alternate universe, the character has been transformed into Dr. Elenore Thawne. Unlike her male counterpart, Dr. Elenore Thawne leads Project Olympus, a U.S. government initiative that appears to be developing metahuman soldiers.
Absolute Evil #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on October 1, 2025.
