Latest news about The Buccaneers for those who are curious: Things have turned into quite a spectacle! Confusion reigns, disaster looms. Oh boy, there will be tears by the finale! But guess what? It’s fantastic. Characters are having romantic encounters in castles with unexpected partners, they’re getting hitched while under the influence, and even dressing up as juggling blue cats. This is The Buccaneers at its best. Exactly what we signed up for. Though the blue-cat part might not be everyone’s cup of tea, it’s refreshing to see Honoria asserting her power. And donning those fuzzy blue cat ears, too!
In just a few days, Lizzy is set to wed Hector, but instead of preparing for her upcoming nuptials, she’s found herself entangled with Theo all over Tintagel castle, clearly not her intended groom. Their passion is palpable, leaving no rain-soaked window sill untouched by their bare derrieres. Theo, in a rather disingenuous move, invokes the spirits of future bachelors to express his feelings for Lizzy, which reek of immaturity and insensitivity towards her emotional turmoil. The term “falling in love” is an evasion – does he truly love her or not? Moreover, considering Lizzy’s impending marriage, Theo being a married duke, and the taboo nature of divorce, his proposal of a life as someone’s mistress is ill-timed and unrealistic. When confronted at her pre-wedding party, he attempts to caress her back and hold her hand, to which she responds by stating she has had enough of hidden secrets.
Hector provides Lizzy an secure, delightful lifestyle, allowing her to reside openly. Mabel, who swiftly realizes the connection between her sister and the duke, advises her that Hector embodies everything Lizzy has ever desired. Prior to their voyage across the Atlantic, this is what she aspired for. Despite it appearing as if she has an obvious decision before her, she can’t shake off thoughts about how Theo stirs her emotions. After what Seadown did to her, she never imagined she could experience pleasure or fall in love again, but Theo has mended all of that. “I feel liberated,” she confides in Mabel, and this sensation is hard to let go of.
It’s particularly challenging for her to step away once Theo reciprocates her feelings. However, when Nan resurfaces and proposes a compromise: She’ll remain at Tintagel, pretending all is well to pass her women’s-rights bill and bring Jinny home legitimately, then she’ll depart. They can maintain a facade in public but lead separate lives otherwise. Given that Theo shares all the emotions Lizzy has – freedom, recognition, ability to breathe – he believes this solves all his issues. Unfortunately, he doesn’t fully comprehend what he’s effectively asking of Lizzy until she clarifies it for him.
It’s unlikely that Mabel realizes the significant impact her pre-wedding toast about Lizzy getting everything she desires, even something as unusual as Honoria taking the role of a juggling blue cat that Lizzy once wished for at age 6, will have – particularly on Lizzy and Theo.
In preparation for the upcoming event, Lizzy finds herself largely engrossed as Nan shares the news that her relationship with Guy has indeed ended, a revelation that leaves their past romantic feelings in question. This realization could potentially apply to Lizzy and Theo’s connection as well, and perhaps it is time for both of them to move on, much like Nan suggests. On the other hand, Theo, devoid of his usual picturesque cliffside, channels his introspective moments along the banks of the Thames instead, a setting known to be conducive to deep thought.
In due course, Theo reaches a decision and then takes off in a classic rom-com sprint. Will he manage to reach the church in time to prevent Lizzy from tying the knot? And might someone provide him with a towel to dry off, considering his sweaty state? (After all, a good rom-com sprint should always be a bit sweaty — that’s what they call realism). He arrives mere moments before Lizzy steps inside. Remarkably, the only person Theo can see is Lizzy herself, and not one of her friends or her interfering mother decides to trail her even a step outside the church when Lizzy pauses before entering and requests a moment. Not a soul even ventures outside to check on their friend who’s standing at the verge of matrimony? Just to ensure she’s alright? It seems strange that these women, who supposedly can’t sleep unless they’re all snuggled up in bed together, would choose to give her some personal space. How very convenient for everyone involved.
Theo delivers his heartfelt speech against marriage for Lizzy, emphasizing her right to a passionate, complete love. However, his speech takes an unexpected turn as he admits that he can’t offer her security or a fulfilling life, and suggests she deserves “a whole love.” While the message may be well-intentioned, its delivery is inopportune and coming from Theo, who is unaware of Lizzy’s true circumstances, makes it even more problematic. The consequences for Lizzy if she walks away could be severe. It remains to be seen what Lizzy decides to do in the next episode, but it seems unlikely she will marry Hector for dramatic purposes. My lack of investment in either outcome is due to the underdeveloped and chemically-lacking relationship between Lizzy and Theo this season on The Buccaneers. Despite the tragic nature of their situation, so far there have been no clear winners.
No matter what action Lizzy takes, it’s clear that the secret affair will eventually surface because the series has carefully depicted Nan discovering an earring in Tintagel’s castle, which she later recognizes as belonging to her friend. Soon, Nan can expect a series of surprises, and she needs to prepare herself. Despite leaving Italy for honorable reasons, her short stay there seems to have set off some concerning waves.
Initially, we have Jinny, a character who has had numerous individuals make significant sacrifices for her sake. Despite this, there’s a lingering doubt about whether all these efforts won’t be in vain. While it’s true that she isn’t succumbing to Seadown’s manipulations outright, she’s certainly struggling with the situation. Seadown is skilled at exploiting her feelings of guilt for prioritizing her life over Guy’s and then adds more statements about loving her and things supposedly changing now, all while aiming to be a good father.
Jinny still secretly meets him, which isn’t encouraging but neither does it mean she’s fully convinced by his charms. He’s trying to deceive her into believing that she asked to return to England to be with Nan and then purchases her a ticket on the next boat out. However, Jinny isn’t being fooled. I have concerns about Seadown because it seems inevitable that he won’t leave without Jinny and his son. This worries me for everyone in that small town, even the gelato vendor.
Seadown is trying to hide his anger for now, but it can’t last. The tension is palpable.
As a movie enthusiast, let me put it this way: Guy should be on high alert, especially if he tries to block Seadown’s path at any juncture. (I can almost hear the ominous music playing – someone isn’t walking away from this plotline, are they? Are they??) However, Guy is so engrossed in his own sorrow over Nan that he fails to notice any hint of Jinny being amiss at present. Instead, he diverts his attention by getting hammered and then finding himself smitten with Paloma. They’re having a grand time! It’s quite delightful. Yet, the morning after, Paloma realizes they had one too many drinks and tied the knot. This unexpected twist in their storyline undoubtedly adds complexity to whatever is coming up for them. I’m guessing that at some point, they’ll return to England, which means Guy and Nan will cross paths once more. If Paloma values her stress-free existence, she should make a run for it!

Reede helps fulfill someone else’s aspirations by inviting Honoria to teach in Provence. At first, she hesitates, but it’s Mabel, with her unselfish heart, who encourages her to step out and explore the world, despite the possibility of separation.
Mabel experiences a poignant moment with her mother, surprisingly enough. With the realization that Honoria is slipping away, Mabel feels defeated and distraught, longing to return to New York as everyone else seems to have found their soulmate. In her unique manner, Mrs. Elmsworth encourages Mabel not to lose hope. “The world is full of beauty, wildness, and vastness,” she says. Though she may not fully comprehend Mabel’s true nature, she does acknowledge her resilience and wondrous qualities, making the exchange quite heartwarming.
• Theo’s rom-com run is set to “Fly Too Close” by Caroline Kingsbury and it is the perfect choice.
