Over time, the Elder Scrolls series has evolved to be less unconventional, with Skyrim being notably ordinary. With The Elder Scrolls 6 now approaching playability, it might not take long until we finally get our hands on the next installment of this RPG series.
As a gamer, I’ve come to appreciate the quirky elements in previous games, but if you’re hoping for even more offbeat adventures, it seems like the co-lead designer of Skyrim, Kurt Kuhlmann, suggests that Todd Howard, the lead at Bethesda, might not go all out with the zaniness we’ve seen before.
The Elder Scrolls 6 won’t be weird
In an interview with Kiwi Talkz through GamesRadar, Kuhlmann pointed out that rejoining Bethesda during the creation of Oblivion made him realize how much of the series’ unique quirks were being eliminated.
Originally depicted in games like Arena and Daggerfall, Cyrodiil was portrayed as a complex, multi-species jungle rife with Imperial prejudice. However, through subsequent lore changes, it’s been transformed into a more traditional high fantasy setting by Bethesda, which suited the gaming environment at that time.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but reflect on the evolution of Oblivion, following closely in the footsteps of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It seems that its development may have inadvertently nudged it towards a more conventional high fantasy realm. However, Todd Howard’s personal preferences might offer some insight. It appears he isn’t particularly drawn to the peculiarities that characterized the earliest Elder Scrolls games.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to say that Morrowind stands out among the 3D Elder Scrolls games as the most peculiar. Its unique setting is one of the main reasons it remains a fan favorite even today. Now, while Elsweyr and Black Marsh should theoretically be just as bizarre, I’m not so sure they’ll maintain that charm if they appear in The Elder Scrolls 6.
The Skyrim co-lead expressed doubt, saying he wasn’t sure if it was feasible for them to create a game set in Elsweyr or Black Marsh.
Despite the less-than-stellar launch of Starfield two years ago from Zenimax, we’re still eagerly looking forward to the next installment in The Elder Scrolls series. Although Elder Scrolls Online and the recently released Oblivion Remastered have temporarily filled my appetite for Tamriel, I can’t wait to delve deeper into this captivating world.
