Two years have passed since Baldur’s Gate 3 was fully released, and I’ve just stumbled upon a hidden secret in the game. Contrary to Helia, who was regrettably omitted before the final version, there is another companion lurking within. It seems that Scratch the dog and Owlbear cub aren’t the only creatures that can join your camp. However, one might question if this hidden entity truly qualifies as an animal. Let us delve into the origins of this mysterious figure.
The fireproof sheep that might explode – BG3 at its best
Discovering this new ally in BG3 seems like such an unlikely event, it’s amazing anyone managed to find it at all. I’m not sure who initially discovered that a sheep could join your party, but it must have been quite a shock. However, let me clarify one thing: this isn’t a regular companion. Instead, it’s a summonable creature you can control, much like the cute, walking brain character from the prologue.
Now, here’s what you need to do:
- In Act 3, head to the Elfsong Tavern in the Lower City. Remember Harvard Willoughby, the self-proclaimed comedian? Unfortunately, he needs to die. Yes, it’s cruel (especially with his son watching) but it’s a necessary step. Just be aware that a guard will show up immediately afterward to arrest you. But there are a few options to avoid getting locked up.
- Next, you’ll need to ring two bells. One is located at the top of the tower on the Lower City Central Wall, just outside the entrance to Szarr Palace. The other can be found atop the Open Hand Temple tower in Rivington.
- You can complete these steps in any order, as long as Harvard is dead before you ring the second bell.
After completing all tasks, make your way back to your camp in Rivington. Near Gale’s tent, you’ll discover a peculiar nest harboring an enigmatic egg. Interact with the egg, and a sheep named Harvard Willoughby will suddenly descend from the sky (take care not to get hit). You can summon and dismiss him by interacting with the egg again, but remember: he cannot be brought back once he’s gone.
Harvard the Sheep possesses spells such as Wall of Thorns, Call Lightning, Entangle, and Thorn Whip. He also has a unique ability to resist fire damage. However, there’s a risk involved – at the beginning of each of his turns, a random number from 0 to 27 is added to the current round number. If this total reaches 30, poor Harvard Willoughby will explode, causing fire damage to any nearby creatures. Unfortunately, even with his fire resistance, he disintegrates in the blast, meaning there’s always a small chance he won’t survive the explosion.
In Patch 8, it appears that the character Harvard the Sheep was introduced, making it relatively fresh content. While I can’t help but feel there’s a more profound narrative connecting Harvard the sheep, the human Harvard, and the bells, for now, the storyline remains elusive and unexplored by me.
Time and time again, I find myself uncovering hidden gems in Baldur’s Gate 3. From craftily combining a specific weapon with a curse to amass nearly limitless power, or cleverly outmaneuvering Auntie Ethel during our initial encounter, there’s always something fresh to discover. In fact, I stumbled upon a potent Wizard weapon early in the game by knowing where to search – a testament to the intricate detail Larian Studios has infused into every aspect of this masterful CRPG. It’s no wonder it stands as an exemplar of how a CRPG should be crafted with such care and attention.
