This season of “House of the Dragon” didn’t receive any Emmy Award nominations this year, which breaks a significant record previously held by “Game of Thrones.
For eight seasons between 2011 and 2019, HBO’s Game of Thrones left an impressive mark on the Emmy Awards, television’s most esteemed honors.
In every season of its adaptation, the show was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series and managed to win the award four times. With a staggering total of 164 Emmy nominations, Game of Thrones emerged victorious in 59 categories, making it the most acclaimed drama series ever produced, according to this particular measure.
In the first season of House of the Dragon, it continued the tradition by receiving eight more nominations, one of which was for Outstanding Drama Series. Regrettably, this run of success was broken as Season 2 did not secure any Emmy nominations at all.

House of the Dragon Season 2 falls short at the Emmys
On July 15th, it was announced who was nominated for the Emmys in 2025, but House of the Dragon Season 2 did not make an appearance among the nominees.
For the very first time, a series related to Game of Thrones or a spinoff from it hasn’t been nominated for the Outstanding Drama Series award this year. The nominees in this category are the following eight shows:
This is the first time that neither Game of Thrones nor any of its spinoffs have been included in the list of nominees for the Outstanding Drama Series award, with these eight shows being the ones chosen instead:
- Andor
- The Diplomat
- The Last of Us
- Paradise
- The Pitt
- Severance
- Slow Horses
- The White Lotus
However, it’s important to note that the lack of recognition wasn’t limited to one category. Regrettably, House of the Dragon didn’t receive any Emmy nominations at all.
Although Season 2 had its flaws, we commended it for expanding on the strong points from the initial season and addressing areas that needed improvement. Regrettably, some parts of the fan base still expressed criticism.
In 2022, the initial season of the first Game of Thrones prequel series was broadcasted, and its second season came out two years after that. It’s anticipated that the third season will be released sometime around 2026. On the other hand, the second Game of Thrones spinoff has been postponed; the premiere date for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is now scheduled for 2026 as well.
