Today marks the debut of Season Three in the competitive mode of Counter-Strike 2 on Steam, although the team playfully calls it “Season Two: Episode One.” The day was filled with anticipation as players eagerly awaited news about the update, some patient and others not so much. At exactly 5:00 PM Pacific Time on July 15th, the update was released without warning. Reactions from the gaming community were swift, expressing their thoughts on the changes that came with this new season.
Counter-Strike 2 Premier Season 3 is here, Anubis is out, Overpass is in, no Cache, and players share their thoughts
If you’re not in the know, “Counter-Strike 2” is often the top game played on Steam, drawing in more than a million players every day. Not many other games can boast such consistent popularity, as per SteamDB. The new season brings some changes to the Premier metagame by altering maps, adjusting rules, and restarting the leaderboard.
In a widely played game like this, opinions on updates can differ greatly. On a recent Reddit post detailing the changes for the new season, one user commented exuberantly: “-ANUBIS +OVERPASS… WE’RE HAVING A FEAST TODAY” (all caps). Another user responded to that comment, expressing their disappointment: “I am so upset, Anubis is my preferred map…” Many players were hoping for Cache, a beloved map from 2019, to come back. However, earlier this year, a remade version of Cache became available in the workshop.
Regarding gameplay, Valve has made three significant adjustments. To prevent rushing by Ts (Terrorists), incendiary grenade fires will now spread faster. In terms of the MP9 gun, it has been weakened, making it harder to manage spray and reducing its jumping accuracy considerably. Lastly, an intriguing new feature for Counter-Terrorists in competitive modes: CTs receive a shared team award each time a T is eliminated in the round, regardless of the match’s outcome. The closer the game, the more valuable the reward, even if you end up losing.
As the fresh season begins, it’s inevitable that we may encounter some bumps and challenges along the way. For now, let’s wait and observe how the players adapt. Will there be a rise in the number of participants? Or will some find these changes less appealing? There has been a significant amount of worry among players regarding a new anti-fraud mechanism. Given the complex in-game economy in CS2, this could potentially have far-reaching consequences. We’ll just have to wait and see.
