Popular Wind Breaker webtoon canceled over plagiarism scandal

The widely-loved South Korean comic series, Wind Breaker, has been formally terminated due to its creator admitting to copying elements from other well-known comics.

The comic book titled “Wind Breaker,” not to be confused with the 2024 anime, was developed by Yongseok Jo from South Korea. This webtoon made its debut in December 2013 on Webtoon and soon gained immense popularity, ranking as one of the platform’s top-performing series.

As a gamer, I’ve always been impressed by this game series that seamlessly blends stylish character designs with gripping storytelling, while keeping the adrenaline pumping with fast-paced bike races and touching slice-of-life moments. But unfortunately, I learned that the original web comic, which is 11 years old now, was taken down after its creator admitted to using references from other artists for character poses and compositions without their consent.

The revelation emerged following fan investigations that assembled parallel images, revealing striking similarities between Wind Breaker’s artwork and illustrations found in numerous manga and anime series.

On the show’s official site, Jo expressed regret for his actions, saying: “It’s obvious now that it was my error. Working tirelessly to meet one deadline after another, I unintentionally neglected my duties as a creator and fell short of maintaining the standards I should have upheld.

He expressed, ‘I’m sincerely regretful to announce that I must cease it. I apologize wholeheartedly, and my feelings are heavy with disappointment towards my readers.’
