Subnautica 2 Leak Is Real, Krafton Confirms

Recently, it’s been reported that the co-founders of Subnautica 2 developer Unknown Worlds Studio, Charlie Cleveland, Max McGuire, and former CEO Ted Gill, were pushed out by the studio’s parent company, Krafton. A disagreement between the two parties arose concerning whether Subnautica 2 was ready for an early release. Now, a critical internal evaluation of Subnautica 2 has been exposed online, and Krafton has verified that the document is authentic.

A leaked document, posted on Reddit associated with Subnautica 2, offers criticism of the current build, as of May 2025, stating that it is missing several features initially planned for an early-access release. The document highlights significant cuts such as six hours of content, removal of a game mode, and reduced biomes, along with a late leviathan and vehicle, and postponed narrative. In essence, the document suggests that Subnautica 2 has not met its 2023 goals and advises reevaluating the release schedule and content plan. Following this report, Krafton officially announced a delay for Subnautica 2 together with a new game trailer.

According to a representative from Krafton, “Milestone evaluations are consistently carried out together with our creative studios for all ongoing projects.” These assessments aid in tracking development progress, setting precise targets, and guaranteeing that every project meets Krafton’s standards regarding both creativity and quality. This method is essential to Krafton’s dedication to releasing well-polished, top-notch games at the appropriate moment.

According to Bloomberg’s report, the delay in Subnautica 2 might be connected to a $250 million bonus that Krafton was supposed to pay Unknown Worlds if specific financial targets were achieved by 2025. As it seems improbable for these benchmarks to be reached without Subnautica 2 launching, some disgruntled fans have suggested boycotting the game. In response, Krafton issued a harsh statement implicating Unknown Worlds’ previous management team for neglecting their duties regarding the sequel.

Following his declaration, Cleveland will be filing a joint lawsuit with McGuire and Gill against Krafton. This legal dispute could stretch over several years. While this unfolds, the anticipated release of Subnautica 2 is set for PC and Xbox Series X|S in the year 2026.
