Mario Movie Team Returns For A Donkey Kong Film, Listing Reveals

Before The Super Mario Bros. Movie became a box office success for Universal Pictures and Illumination, there had been whispers of additional films featuring Nintendo’s iconic characters. It seems that Donkey Kong is now poised to star in his very own movie.

In a twist of fate, Universal and Nintendo have together submitted a copyright application (through IGN) for an upcoming “Donkey Kong movie.” This is quite ironic since decades ago, these two entities found themselves in court disputes over whether Donkey Kong resembled King Kong. However, the tides turned in Nintendo’s favor when their legal team successfully argued that Universal had previously claimed King Kong was part of the public domain.

After settling their differences years ago, these two companies have jointly amassed $1.361 billion globally from the initial Mario Bros. film. The second installment, tentatively titled “The Super Mario World Movie,” is scheduled for release on April 3, 2026. As for Nintendo’s other significant venture in Hollywood, the live-action Legend of Zelda movie, has been pushed back to May 7, 2027.

In the year 2023, Seth Rogen lent his voice to the character Donkey Kong in a film where he served as a supporting protagonist alongside Mario, portrayed by Chris Pratt. With hopes running high, it’s speculated that Rogen might reprise his role in either the upcoming Mario Bros. sequel or the standalone Donkey Kong movie, though no official announcements have been made on this matter yet.

For now, Donkey Kong has undergone a makeover before his debut in a new game after eleven years, titled Donkey Kong Bananza. This upcoming game is scheduled for release on July 17 for Nintendo Switch 2. It’s also possible that the original Donkey Kong 64 could be among several games making their way to Nintendo Switch Online soon.
