Ken Levine, the mastermind behind BioShock, has given fresh insights into his upcoming project titled Judas. In a comprehensive conversation with Lawrence Sonntag from Nightdive, Levine characterized Judas as an old-fashioned style game, implying that it steers clear of contemporary tendencies such as online functionality and live services.
In this purchase, you receive the entire game package. There are no requirements for an online connection, nor a continuous live service, since our focus lies entirely on narrating the story and immersing the player within it. This statement comes from the source, GamesRadar.
Levine further clarified that he doesn’t intend to criticize developers who create such games, acknowledging the high costs associated with their production and the need for companies to recoup their investments. He expressed gratitude towards Ghost Story Games’ owner Take-Two, as they afford the team autonomy in their work. In his words, “We feel fortunate to be part of a company that trusts us enough to say, ‘You’ve been working on this project for quite some time now, it’ll cost a fair amount, and we won’t impose any additional demands on you.’
Deliverance 2, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
In his words, these games are classic single-player titles, devoid of typical in-game monetization strategies. He believes the audience appreciates such games, especially within the AAA market due to their often high prices, and they prefer alternative methods of monetization. To put it simply, he’s thankful that they have the freedom to create a game solely focused on the player’s experience without worrying about these monetization tactics.
It’s been years since Judas was first announced, yet there’s still no set launch date, not even a rough timeline. This upcoming game is being developed for platforms such as PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Since the release of BioShock Infinite in 2013, Ken Levine’s latest project has been underway. However, as reported by Bloomberg in 2022, the game initially aimed for a 2017 launch but encountered delays in development, often referred to as “development hell.” The report further stated that Levine was granted ample time and creative liberty to bring his concept of Judas to life. Initially, this unrestricted freedom appeared ideal, but developers later admitted it ultimately caused more harm than good.
Mike Snight, who had previously collaborated with Levine at Irrational Games and later moved on to work together at Ghost Story, stated that Levine is a challenging individual to work under. It was during development that Sight, along with half of the original Judas team, chose to depart from the company. Rumors suggest that Levine informed the staff that the funds provided by Take-Two to Ghost Story were insignificant in comparison to their Grand Theft Auto business, and analyst Michael Pachter expressed his belief that Take-Two will grant Levine as much time as he requires.
Regarding the BioShock series, it’s Take-Two Interactive’s 2K studio (specifically Cloud Chamber) that is currently developing a brand new BioShock game. Ken Levine, the original creator, is not part of this project, and there is yet no announced release date for the game.
