Gundam anime series creator has said humans will never live in space after decades of imagining it.
Yoshiyuki Tomino, the mastermind behind Mobile Suit Gundam, has expressed doubts about the feasibility of the central theme of his renowned work, space colonization. After numerous years of crafting narratives in vast space habitats, Tomino now questions whether humanity truly possesses the ability to thrive outside Earth.
During the recent Spacetide 2025 commercial space conference, which took place this week in Tokyo, Tomino participated alongside JAXA professor Yoshifumi Inatani in a lively debate about space exploration and settlement.
As reported by The Sankei Shimbun, translated by Automaton, the creator of Gundam did not hesitate to voice his doubts concerning the prospects of human existence beyond Earth.
Gundam creator slams space colonization ideas
During his discussion, Tomino expressed doubts that humans could sustain long-term existence in outer space. More specifically, he raised concerns about the impracticality of Martian colonization, highlighting the inadequacy of current plans for this widespread notion.
As someone who’s spent countless hours exploring virtual galaxies, I can tell you that those who casually suggest we colonize Mars don’t seem to realize the harsh realities of outer space. The question is, how are we going to ensure a fuel supply when it comes time for our return journey?” I inquired.
Those who propose sending humans to Mars without taking into account the lack of existing supply bases might be seen as inexperienced or amateur space explorers.
Despite the fact that Gundam is renowned for its portrayal of Earth’s population moving to enormous space colonies, Tomino has admitted that he never fully agreed with this idea. For more than two decades, he struggled to understand how such a future could be feasible in reality and eventually concluded that it was not possible.
Speaking about his time with Gundam, he mused, “During my work, I never got the opportunity to openly express this thought. After two decades of contemplation, I still haven’t figured out how one could realistically inhabit space.
Rather than pursuing deep-space colonization immediately, Tomino advised that Japan should prioritize near-term objectives such as space travel in Earth’s lower orbit. This is particularly important for leaders, researchers, and the younger generation.
Why bother with Martian colonization when you can savor the excitement of having a KFC Gundam anime bucket right here on Earth instead?
