Overwatch 2 director talks about bringing story content back to the game

In a recent chat with streamer Jay3, Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller expressed a wish to reintegrate more storytelling elements into the popular game, Overwatch. When it initially debuted in 2016, players were captivated by the game’s rich lore and characters. Blizzard regularly produced animated shorts for many of its characters, introducing fresh concepts, relationships, and figures. However, the release of Overwatch 2 in 2022, which replaced the original game and became free-to-play, has been met with significant controversy. Initially, Overwatch 2 was advertised as having a PvE mode that would serve as a “story mode,” but these plans were abandoned in 2023, causing upset and anger among fans.

Overwatch 2 director talks about the importance of story and lore in new interview

In an interview, Overwatch 2’s game director, Aaron Keller, admitted that the original Overwatch might have fallen short in terms of its story and lore, a sentiment many fans might find as an understatement. Notably, Blizzard has not produced an Overwatch animated short since 2023. Even Connor McLeod, Hazard’s voice actor, mentioned that when he first got involved with the game, he believed it was a story-driven game due to the intricate details of its characters, lore, and world, which were further enhanced by watching all the animated shorts.

As someone who used to be passionate about Overwatch but took a step back, let me say this: The developers should only discuss future updates for this game if they are truly committed. The abandoned idea of a PvE story mode has left a lasting scar on the fanbase. That promise was what made all other changes more bearable, so when it was taken away, many Overwatch players felt cheated and were left with numerous unwanted changes and no new exciting features to anticipate. To this day, the Steam page for Overwatch 2 still has one of the lowest review scores I’ve ever encountered on a storefront. As of now, it stands at only 24% positive out of almost 350 thousand reviews.

Following the debut of “Overwatch 2”, there’s been a noticeable progression in the game, particularly over the past year. Fresh concepts unveiled during recent seasons have enticed some players to return, such as Stadium mode – a competitive setting where players can upgrade and customize their character’s abilities throughout the game using a perk system. However, one of the most impactful adjustments took place a year ago when the team opted to no longer restrict new heroes within battle passes.

There’s a possibility that Overwatch 2 could recapture some of its past greatness. Adding more story elements is definitely one way to achieve this. It may involve bringing back animated shorts, developing in-game story content, or even producing an Overwatch television series, as suggested by McLeod in the interview. However, whether they will actually create a PvE mode remains to be seen. Fingers crossed that it’s still on the table for the fans, though I wouldn’t want to get too excited until we hear more definitive news. It’s better to hope for something and have it come late than never to have hoped at all.
