Ballerina: From the World of John Wick
Len Wiseman, 124 minutes
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=yNN2PoilSp4
In the reimagined style of the John Wick franchise, Ana de Armas takes center stage in this rendition of either La Femme Nikita or Red Sparrow, where we follow the story of a young woman transformed into a skilled assassin. This spin-off, titled Ballerina, is essentially an offshoot from a character glimpsed briefly in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (which remains outstanding). In this film, de Armas pursues retribution against the gang responsible for her father’s death, led by a villain portrayed by Gabriel Byrne. The initial portion of the movie may seem a bit rough compared to previous Wick installments, but once it picks up in the latter half, it truly delivers. The film features an impressive scene in a kitchen and a thrilling flamethrower battle that action enthusiasts should not miss.
Thunderbolts*
Jake Schreier, 127 minutes

It’s apparent that the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t maintaining its previous level of success, as demonstrated by the relatively low box-office earnings for this May’s blockbuster. Interestingly, this particular movie is not poor in quality, particularly when assessed against recent MCU productions. Florence Pugh heads a fresh band of lesser-known heroes, comprising David Harbour as Red Guardian and Wyatt Russell as John Walker. Additionally, Lewis Pullman delivers an impressive performance as the future antagonist of a film that manages to subvert enough familiar MCU themes that it’s worth watching.

Karate Kid: Legends
Jonathan Entwistle, 94 minutes
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=uPzOyzsnmio
Following the triumph of Cobra Kai, it seemed only natural that a heartwarming fusion of the Karate Kid’s worlds would eventually occur, and here we stand! This movie brings together Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso from the ’80s trilogy and Jackie Chan’s Mr. Han from the 2010 remake. Additionally, a new promising student named Li (portrayed by Ben Wang) enters the scene, encountering both potential mentors. Amidst the bustling summer blockbuster season, this film might have slipped under the radar for some fans, who may not be aware of its existence. Now they can discover it at their convenience!
The Phoenician Scheme
Wes Anderson, 101 minutes
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=GEuMnPl2WI4
In a unique style, Anderson poses profound questions through comedy that initially appears lighthearted, but delves into themes of mortality and responsibility. Benicio del Toro portrays a powerful figure who, having cheated death numerous times, seeks reconciliation with his estranged nun daughter (Mia Threapleton) to secure an heir before his fate changes. With standout performances from Michael Cera and Anderson’s talented ensemble, this film is one of the top picks for 2025 thus far.

Materialists
Celine Song, 116 minutes
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=4A_kmjtsJ7c
The creator behind the critically acclaimed movie “Past Lives” subsequently produced this romantic comedy revolving around three extraordinarily attractive individuals entangled in a love triangle. At the summit of their predicament is Dakota Johnson’s character, who serves as a matchmaker and finds herself caught between her ex-lover (Chris Evans) and a wealthy charmer portrayed by Pedro Pascal. Rather than adhering to typical rom-com conventions, the film instead seeks to dissect and challenge them, leading some viewers to have mixed opinions (earning a B- on CinemaScore). However, it seems like it may resonate more with audiences when watched at home.
