Overwatch 2 boss admits they “dropped the ball” with PvE & wants to return to story

In simpler terms, the director of Overwatch 2, named Aaron Keller, acknowledged their mistake in scrapping the multiplayer versus environment (PvE) content, but promised the game’s narrative will continue to be developed further for fans.

Initially unveiled in 2019, OW2 was initially intended to primarily feature story missions for a richly developed universe. However, the direction soon shifted and it transformed into the multiplayer hero shooter we’re familiar with today. Despite this change, it was still expected that PvE content would be introduced at a later stage.

Yet, upon the arrival of the initial story missions in Season 6, dubbed “Invasion,” sales failed to meet expectations. Consequently, the entire project was terminated, with Blizzard redirecting its focus entirely towards the multiplayer aspect.

Since that time, there hasn’t been much new information available, however, the Game Director of OW2 has eased concerns among fans by stating that the story content is not permanently lost.

OW2 Game Director wants to get back to story content

In a chat with Twitch streamer Jay 3, Keller admitted his own disappointment about the relatively minimal focus on the Overwatch storyline and world in more recent times.

During the stream, Keller expressed that it seems as though Overwatch may not be delivering on its story and lore in the way it once did, saying, “It’s like they’re not giving it the attention they used to.” He added that there were more significant animated shorts released in the past compared to what is being produced now.

He explained that the abandoned PvE mode represented a significant attempt by Blizzard in terms of story development, but unfortunately, it didn’t succeed as intended. For now, they need to step away from it. However, there’s a hint that they plan to revisit and resume working on it at some point in the future.

Originally, our intention was to delve into the storyline within the game, which encompassed the PvE aspects including the campaign. Unfortunately, that plan didn’t materialize as intended, serving as a pivotal moment of reevaluation for us. Now, we aim to return to this endeavor.

I find the universe and characters in Overwatch particularly appealing, and we aim to return to that aspect. However, we’ve encountered some setbacks that have required us to take a step back.

Despite not providing details on the type of content or an exact timeframe for its return, Keller reassured players that the animated shorts will come back to the game eventually. He emphasized that the full potential of the game won’t be realized without these animated shorts.
