In James Gunn’s Superman, there’s a quick scene that sets the stage for Season 2 of Peacemaker, thanks to an impressive guest appearance.
James Gunn’s version of Superman isn’t only about presenting a fresh take on the Man of Steel, but it also sets the foundation for the revamped DC Universe.
In essence, the movie abounds with a variety of characters, ranging from main figures such as Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor, to staff members at the Daily Planet, as well as superheroes including Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, Green Lantern, and Metamorpho.
In the midst of it all, there’s an amusing guest appearance that sets the stage for Season 2 of Peacemaker. Be warned: There are spoilers ahead…
Peacemaker briefly appears in Superman
A significant portion of Superman’s narrative often centers around a message that the deceased parents of Kal-El, Jor-El and Lara, sent to him. This message is a common element in Superman tales, typically offering kind counsel.
In this scene, Jor-El advises his son to rule Earth firmly, marry multiple women, and show no compassion. It’s uncertain whether this message is genuine or if it has been altered by Lex Luthor, which leaves the audience questioning its authenticity throughout the film.
In essence, Jor-El’s message is transmitted globally, causing humanity to perceive Superman as a potential tyrant. At this very moment, an unlikely hero, Christopher Smith (also known as Peacemaker), makes an unforeseen entrance.
In his costume as the Peacemaker, Smith expresses on a news program that he wasn’t taken aback by the rumors about Superman’s possible transformation.
In the screening I went to, that opinion elicited a large amount of laughter, and it could stir up conflict among established figures in DC in a subsequent narrative.
Rick Flag Sr. turns from hero to villain

During the film, it’s not just about setting the table; Rick Flag Sr. also plays a role in this process. He is tasked with apprehending Superman due to his father’s misdeeds, an event that contributes to Flag Sr.’s descent into darkness.
Initially appearing as the commander of Task Force M in the debut DC Universe series, Creature Commandos, and later serving as the head of A.R.G.U.S., Flag was brought to life and given voice by Frank Grillo.
However, the tragic loss of his son at the hands of Smith in The Suicide Squad has significantly altered Rick’s perspective, transforming him from a hero to the antagonist in Peacemaker Season 2.
According to James Gunn’s explanation to Collider: “Rick Flag, initially a character from Creature Commandos, transforms over time, appearing in Superman, and then shifts roles. He begins as the main character in one series but becomes more like an adversary in Season 2.”
In addition to observing Christopher Smith making a sneaky jab at Superman, you’re also going to catch some preliminary development of Rick Flag Sr., which will prove significant when Peacemaker makes his comeback in August.
