The Ghost of Yotei’s Current Scenario has recently showcased an exceptionally impressive feature, a concept that I firmly believe should be adopted by all future open-world games.
In the year 2020, Ghost of Tsushima debuted, introducing an exclusive gameplay feature. In homage to the illustrious filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, Sucker Punch Productions incorporated a distinct Kurosawa Mode within the game.
Activating Kurosawa Mode significantly altered the gaming environment, converting the lush hues of Tsushima Island into dramatic black-and-white scenes. As anticipated, this distinctive mode was indeed included in the upcoming title, Ghost of Yotei.
Yet, the developers at Sucker Punch didn’t stop at merely paying tribute to Kurosawa; they also incorporated elements from two more innovative minds in the creative sphere into the sequel.

Initially, Japanese director Takashi Miike has been given a unique treatment named Miike Mode. Activating this mode adjusts the camera to get closer during fights, increasing the tension. Additionally, it amplifies gory and muddy visual effects, emphasizing the grisly aspects even more.
However, what really shone during the State of Play event was the third and last notable addition. Paying homage to Cowboy Bebop’s director, Shinichirō Watanabe, Sucker Punch has introduced a unique mode overflowing with Lo-fi tunes. It not only looks captivating but also promises an intoxicating audio experience.
Ghost of Yotei’s Lo-Fi mode is simply genius
Watanabe has earned recognition for his outstanding work in animation, blending stunning visuals with energetic soundtracks to create a unique impact. Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo are prime examples of this style, with Cowboy Bebop being particularly noteworthy. In fact, Samurai Champloo was specifically highlighted by Sucker Punch during their Yotei broadcast.
With this special feature enabled, soothing tunes by Watanabe will accompany our steps harmoniously as we meander through the scenic landscapes that are now recognized as Hokkaido.
The concept is outstanding, and judging from the short preview we got, it’s evident that great attention has been given to its execution.
The Ghost of Yotei will introduce a fresh ‘Watanabe Mode,’ playing mellow lo-fi hip hop beats as you journey through the game. This mode features unique, original tracks by the director of Samurai Champloo, Shinichirō Watanabe. 🔥#GhostofYotei #StateofPlay #PS5

Although it doesn’t initially seem a ‘comfortable’ game given its violent elements like dismembering limbs and seeking vengeance for Atsu’s family’s murder, there’s something incredibly fitting about it.
In a more relaxed phrasing: Ghost of Tsushima offered a tranquil atmosphere when not engaged in battle. Boasting exceptionally beautiful landscapes and captivating graphics, it was hard not to feel transported by the wind, completely immersed in the stunning portrayal of 13th-century Japan.
As you journeyed along various vibrant and varied landscapes on horseback, as each sunset graced your sight, every haiku crafted by your hand, they all contributed to creating a tranquil atmosphere amidst the tumult.
The atmospheric focus from Ghost of Yotei seems to have been continued and even intensified in some aspects.
Admittedly, a Lo-fi mode might not suit every open-world game, considering it’s hard to envision characters like Arthur Morgan enjoying Lo-fi hip hop radio beats for studying or relaxation. However, this is a feature that game developers from all corners of the industry should be mindful of and potentially consider incorporating in their projects.
