Nintendo bans Switch 2 users for playing used Switch game

As a passionate Nintendo gamer, I’ve been taken aback by the recent wave of concerns among the gaming community. It seems that some gamers have encountered unexpected bans on the new Switch 2 console, supposedly due to using cartridges originally intended for the first-generation Nintendo Switch. These cartridges range from personally purchased ones off Facebook Marketplace, to those borrowed from libraries and even rented games.

On July 8th, a Reddit user stated that their newly purchased Switch 2 console got banned. This occurred when they inserted previously owned Switch 1 games and tried to download updates or patches. The user mentioned that Nintendo detected these game titles as duplicated content.

Watch out when purchasing pre-owned Nintendo Switch games, as playing a game that has been maliciously ‘dumped’ may result in your account being banned. I cautiously inserted each game into my new Switch console, giving them time to update… Unfortunately, today when I turned on the device, it informed me that my online services were limited.

Nintendo takes drastic action against copied software

As per the user’s account, they were unable to download recently bought digital games because of a ban, and provided further details about the issue in a subsequent discussion.

Individuals, possibly including the seller, created replicas of video games onto MIG cartridges. After selling the genuine items, a situation occurs where both the original and copied versions appear online. Both get temporarily banned by Nintendo. If you can prove that you own the authentic games to Nintendo, they will lift the ban on your account, while the culprit remains banned.

The player claimed that Nintendo removed the ban on them, following their presentation of pictures of the game cartridges along with their original online marketplace posts from Facebook.

Should you encounter a ban, head over to the Nintendo support site and choose ‘Start Chat’ when interacting with a human. This option is quick, hassle-free, and ensures you’ll receive immediate assistance!

A different Reddit user reported a comparable incident, attributing their ban to past instances of duplicating library rental materials.

Fortunately, they also managed to get unbanned following a chat with Nintendo’s customer service team, and shared the details of their discussion.

They advised against utilizing the library because there’s a high probability someone might steal the materials.

The company is currently dealing with lawsuits in Brazil because they can disable consoles and limit access to services such as the eShop if they suspect a user has breached their terms of service. This could be due to using unapproved add-ons or illegitimate software.
