Discord raises server member cap 5x allowing for 2.5M users at a time

Discord has boosted the maximum number of members for its default servers from 500 thousand to a staggering 2.5 million. This means that bigger online communities can now keep expanding without encountering the old limitations on their size.

The announcement follows a significant growth milestone for multiple communities on the platform, such as Midjourney and Genshin Impact, which now boast over a million members each.

Discord clarified that if servers surpass the new threshold, they can ask for additional increases, but these expansions are contingent on a review process considering moderation effectiveness, community interaction, and compliance with Trust & Safety regulations. Furthermore, servers with significant memberships will continue experiencing limited push notifications to only mentions, in an effort to minimize the strain on the platform.

Discord now allows 2.5M people in a single server

In their update released on July 7, they mentioned that several improvements have been implemented to enhance support for big servers. Specifically, the maximum number of members allowed in a server has been increased from half a million to two and a half million (that’s right, MILLION). Furthermore, the speed at which member lists load on large servers has been improved to facilitate easier management and navigation.

Additionally, we enhanced our server monitoring and autoscale systems to more efficiently identify and address any performance problems on individual servers. This means that you won’t need to contact our support team in such cases.

Over the last year, Discord has been constantly updating and improving its services to make them more enjoyable for users and easier for community managers. In the beginning of 2025, they introduced Soundboard, a feature that enables users to play short sound clips during voice conversations. Additionally, Discord extended their Activities feature, which now includes built-in games and collaborative applications that can be used without having to leave the platform.

Additional changes were made, including strengthened moderation features like refinements to AutoMod, and the rollout of Quests – these are limited, time-based, sponsored activities within servers. Efforts have been directed towards optimizing mobile app functionality as well, with various updates aimed at minimizing crashes and enhancing voice and video quality.

The most recent expansion of the server capacity and inclusion of new features are all part of Discord’s larger strategy to adapt to its expanding community.
