The unveiling of the new trailer for Subnautica 2 hasn’t run as smoothly as planned for Unknown Worlds and its parent company Krafton, with fans more concerned about leadership departures and potential financial losses rather than appreciating the new footage. Specifically, there are allegations that the departure of senior personnel at Unknown Worlds was involuntary and that the delay in Subnautica 2’s release may result in the team missing out on a $250 million bonus. As a result, some players have started advocating for a boycott of Subnautica 2.
According to Bloomberg’s initial report, the entire team at Unknown Worlds was expected to receive a portion of a $250 million bonus if the company met its financial targets in 2025. It appears that these targets might have been based on an early-access release of Subnautica 2 this year. A Reddit user has suggested that the delay in releasing the game is merely to avoid having to distribute the bonuses, as the company allegedly earned $250 million by exploiting developers. The user cautions against letting Krafton accumulate more wealth from such practices.

In the process of playtesting Subnautica 2, we gathered helpful insights from our players which confirmed our conviction about the game’s development path. However, these tests also pointed out certain aspects that needed more polishing before the game is launched. Since the community’s opinion significantly influences our game creation, we have chosen to extend the development team’s time so they can address this feedback and produce a more comprehensive gameplay experience. Consequently, we are adjusting the release date for early access of Subnautica 2 to 2026.
The representative further stated that the choice was exclusively driven by our dedication to providing top-notch quality and an exceptional player experience. No contractual or monetary factors played a role in this decision. Moreover, these discussions about the decision were initiated before the latest management shifts within the studio.
Charlie Cleveland, one of the recent departed co-founders from Unknown Worlds, has expressed that Subnautica 2 could be available as an early release version. However, he emphasized that the final call on this matter lies with Krafton now.
Subnautica 2 will be released on Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2026.
