During this year’s Future Games Show, it was revealed that The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, a role-playing game, shares striking similarities with the Mass Effect series from its very debut. The minds behind Owlcat Games appear to be influenced by BioWare games, while also drawing inspiration from other titles such as Baldur’s Gate 3 and Persona 5.
At this year’s Future Games Show, the RPG game The Expanse: Osiris Reborn was introduced with a strong resemblance to the Mass Effect series. Owlcat Games seems to be inspired by BioWare games, and they also look up to other games like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Persona 5.
Comparing it to Mass Effect is an “honor”
Lately, Polygon held an interview with the creative director of “Osiris Reborn”, Alexandre Mishulin. In the discussion, the developer acknowledged that he welcomes all comparisons to Mass Effect, understanding that such comparisons increase player anticipation for the upcoming game from Owlcat Games studio.
Above all, we are deeply moved. The influential role that Mass Effect played during the Xbox 360 era resonates strongly with us since many members of our team reminisce about their youth playing it. It serves as a significant inspiration for us in the realm of game development. Many individuals in the gaming industry found their calling due to games like Mass Effect, including ourselves, aspiring to create something similar or simply make games as a profession. Consequently, it would be an understatement to say that Mass Effect has not significantly influenced our work as developers.
Nonetheless, he pointed out that while there are similarities, Osiris Reborn will showcase notable differences compared to BioWare’s space opera. Mishulin noted that it’s been quite some time since the ME trilogy was released, and the gaming industry has experienced some evolution during this period.
As a devoted fan, I’ve grown accustomed to the ease and convenience of contemporary gaming interfaces and strategies. Unlike simply updating Mass Effect, we’re crafting a game in its genre, yet infusing it with all the modern amenities that today’s gamers have come to expect.
Osiris Reborn won’t be a clone of Mass Effect
Owlcat Games adopts a distinct storytelling style in their RPG compared to BioWare’s approach in the Mass Effect series, particularly with regards to narrative. As announced by Mishulin, this is evident in Osiris Reborn as it presents a wider range of choices and consequences that go beyond good and evil, offering players greater autonomy in their actions.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but highlight the significant focus on intricate details, like the background of the characters, that the creators have put into this game. This aspect is crucial as it influences the way non-player characters (NPCs) interact with your main character. For instance, should you choose to play as an Earther or a Martian, you might find yourself unwelcome on Ceres. However, opt for a Belter character and you’ll garner more respect, opening up additional opportunities and side missions.
However, if your roots lie elsewhere, there are different paths and destinations awaiting you.
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is heading to PC, PS5, and XSX/S. The release date isn’t known yet.
