James Gunn faced a tough time when he was fired from Disney/Marvel in 2018 over old tweets. He later returned to the industry, but for a while, he feared that his Hollywood career was over. In an interview on Armchair Expert, Gunn shared that he thought he would have to live a frugal life with the money he had made from the Guardians movies and Scoobies-Doo. He told Dax Shepard and Monica Padman that he didn’t think he would make any more money in the industry and would have to live frugally for the rest of his life. However, an unexpected opportunity presented itself: ego death!
In simpler terms, Gunn admitted that he had been seeking wealth, fame, and validation from others all along, hoping they would love him. He felt most loved at Brazil ComicCon when 8000 fans chanted his name. However, after being fired and losing his power, he discovered genuine love from the people in his life – his girlfriend (now wife), the Guardians actors, and even his parents. Gunn described this moment as the best day of his life because he realized that he didn’t need to constantly prove himself to gain people’s affection. In other words, experiencing a right-wing backlash might help you find genuine love and self-acceptance.
