After the triumph of its initial release, Tales of Kenzera: Zau, Surgent Studios has chosen to venture into an entirely new genre for its upcoming game – psychological horror. With Dead Take, the studio intends to craft a suspenseful and eerie journey where players piece together real-life footage while navigating a Hollywood mansion and delving into the sinister aspects of celebrity. This significant shift in direction is a challenging endeavor, but a sneak peek at the main actors slipping into their characters definitely instills some trust.
TopMob is thrilled to give you a peek at the main actors, Ben Starr (Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Final Fantasy XVI) and Neil Newbon (Baldur’s Gate 3, Detroit: Become Human), in the game’s live-action scenes. These clips are presented as audition tapes, showing their characters nervously greeting us before sudden supernatural events occur. It’s always a shock when I, who have once more found myself in a deep pit of Baldur’s Gate 3, hear Astarion speaking with a deep American accentbut the ending scenes took me aback even more!

In “Dead Take,” players assume the character of Chase Lowry (Newbon), who’s on a mission to figure out the fate of his friend Vinny Monroe (Starr). This quest takes place as Chase navigates a lavish yet eerie Los Angeles mansion, where Vinny was last spotted. Along the way, he’ll need to sift through videos featuring both men in an effort to piece together the events leading up to Vinny’s disappearance.
It’s important to mention that before the mysterious vanishing act, Chase and Vinny were vying for the same role in a highly-anticipated director’s upcoming film. This suggests some tension between them, but it’s not just jealousy that seems to be at play here—the game also appears to involve a mysterious supernatural element.
The house appears watchful, as if it’s trying to follow your every move. On its Steam page, Take reveals a darker side of the entertainment industry – the whispers about cruelty, gossip, and failed auditions. A mysterious figure wielding power over careers lurks in the shadows. To ensure success, you must offer genuine experiences.
Despite Surgent Studios not specifying a release date yet, Dead Take is labeled as forthcoming on Steam. In their latest press announcement, they mentioned that they will unveil the remaining characters, featuring a significant group of cameos, within the next few weeks.
