Tension around high-profile action RPG has devs staying silent. Threats and harassment are too much for Capcom

It appears that the CEDED 2025 conference, scheduled for July 22-24 in Japan, has been called off, possibly because of security concerns or threats targeted towards the developers, according to reports from Automaton. Originally, Capcom was set to headline a special panel discussing ways to enhance Monster Hunter: Wilds during this event.

Statement regarding threats

A few days past, Capcom spoke out about the mistreatment of their staff. The statement emphasizes that all customer opinions and demands are given significant consideration, but such conduct will not be accepted. They’ve promised an “adequate response,” and in severe instances, they’re prepared to take legal action.

The statement doesn’t explicitly mention that it’s only about the creators of Monster Hunter: Wilds. But based on the game’s “extremely unfavorable” reviews on Steam, we can infer that the creators may be involved in some way.

“Overwhelmingly negative” opinions

Over the past month, more than 20,000 users have given their ratings to the title, but only around one-eighth (12%) of these reviews were positive. While there has been some improvement, the reviews are still far from perfect – in fact, about half (53%) of them have been positive. Since its launch, the game has faced criticism for its suboptimal performance, and even a major update released in June, intended to rebuild players’ confidence, did not seem to make much of a difference.

Regarding the conference, Capcom hasn’t explicitly stated that it was cancelled because of player threats. Nevertheless, the overwhelmingly negative feedback on MH: Wilds and the company’s recent remarks are linked, suggesting a logical conclusion. It’s no surprise that the developers choose to avoid public commentary due to potential escalation of harassment.

Dragon’s Dogma 2, which came out last year, is not receiving positive feedback on Steam due to performance problems, and Capcom’s Monster Hunter: World, an earlier game in the series, also faced similar issues upon its release. However, Monster Hunter: World’s problems were smoothed over more effectively compared to those of Dragon’s Dogma 2. In other words, both games have had challenges on PC, but Capcom handled the issues with Monster Hunter: World more successfully.

The action role-playing game titled “Monster Hunter: Wilds” was released for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on February 28th. Despite some initial problems, it enjoyed a successful debut and swiftly claimed the title of Capcom’s fastest-selling game ever.
