How To Clear The Sims 4’s Cache

Following a prolonged absence of over 10 years and introducing numerous expansion packs, The Sims 4 is a game with multiple layers of complexity. Adding mods to your gameplay only amplifies this intricacy significantly, which can lead to some issues. As you incorporate more mods into the game, it tends to slow down and become less stable. Additionally, if you’ve populated your worlds with numerous Sims obtained from the Gallery, things can quickly become disorganized, leading to extended load times and Sims getting stuck frequently.

Frequently encountered issue among long-term Sims 4 players: With thousands of downloaded custom content pieces over the years, the game doesn’t load everything swiftly. However, don’t fret! Since this isn’t a novel predicament, there are proven methods you can employ to optimize your gaming experience.

A convenient and simple method is to clear the game’s temporary storage, often referred to as the cache, which holds images and other data for quick access. This action primarily benefits those who use mods, but can also be helpful if your Sim worlds are cluttered with numerous Sims or complex homes you’ve either built or downloaded from the Gallery.

Clearing The Sims 4’s cache

A frequent issue encountered by Sims players is that the game can become bogged down due to excessive use of mods, which often causes the cache to accumulate and get disorganized over time. The cache isn’t very efficient at tracking changes made to these mods, leading to a messy buildup of data. As a result, your game may gradually slow down significantly with installed mods.

Cleaning your PC or Mac cache is a breeze, as all you need to do is remove two specific files. To get started, find the location: Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4. Once you’re in that folder, you will then delete the following two files: localthumbcache.package and avatarcache.package.

In addition to the current file, there is another cache named “localsimtexturecache.package” in this folder. This file was initially introduced with the expansion pack “Businesses & Hobbies,” which came out during springtime. Since it’s quite fresh, we’re not entirely sure if deleting it will be beneficial, but an Electronic Arts community manager has assured us that it’s safe to remove it if you wish to give it a try.

Repairing your installation in the EA App

Occasionally, you might delete something unintentionally or encounter file corruption during an update, which may lead to issues or prevent The Sims 4 from functioning properly. If clearing the cache doesn’t resolve the problem, you can use the repair function within the EA App to fix it. To do so, navigate to the Sims 4 page on the EA App, click on “Manage”, and then select “Repair” from the dropdown menu. The app will automatically check for all necessary files related to the base game and any DLC you own, replacing anything that’s missing or corrupted.

Clearing the cache on console

On Xbox or PlayStation consoles, where The Sims 4 is played, cleaning the cache is surprisingly simple compared to doing so on a PC. To accomplish this, simply power off your console completely (not just putting it in rest mode), then unplug it for exactly 60 seconds. This process clears the cache across the entire system.
