Anne Hathaway Is Your Mother, Mary

A24’s upcoming release, titled “Mother Mary,” has garnered excitement on social media platforms like Twitter. This movie boasts an impressive cast including Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel, is helmed by director David Lowery (known for “Ghost Story” and “The Green Knight”), and features original music by Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX. Given its unique creative team, it’s expected to be a thought-provoking and perhaps unconventional film. Contrary to speculation, this movie is not a surrealistic blend of “Eusexua” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” but rather serves as a resurgence for Anne Hathaway’s vocal talents.

Who is Mother Mary?

In summary, the movie features Anne Hathaway as the title character, Mother Mary, who is a well-known pop star. During a critical situation, she encounters an old acquaintance, portrayed by Michaela Coel, who was instrumental in shaping her image. The film predominantly consists of their dialogues in a barn setting, as mentioned in Anne Hathaway’s July Vogue cover article. The narrative, to some extent, centers around the design process of a dress. Additionally, there are scenes featuring “distorted” flashbacks and concerts where Mother Mary performs her music.

So is Anne Hathaway really performing?

For two years, Hathaway attended demanding dance classes for her role, which left her physically restricted. She shared with Vogue that she struggled with taking deep breaths, feeling as if her breathing capacity was limited. However, she had been attempting to expand this space for years, believing it was impossible. The audience will witness the results of Hathaway’s improved breathing in the concert scenes of ‘Mother Mary’ and a solo dance scene in the barn. Coel, from Vogue, spoke about the challenging physical training required for this role, explaining that not only did Hathaway have to learn this newfound agility, but so did the crew, producers, and everyone else involved. The first take was nerve-wracking, but it wasn’t until afterward that they realized how impressive her performance was. Keeping up with multiple takes required a great deal of resilience.

During a voice lesson for the role, Hathaway discovered that she’s not a soprano – something unexpected since her mother is a soprano and a talented singer. As she explained to Vogue, “I’m down here” in terms of vocal range, and it seems this lower register is where she feels most comfortable. In the recording studio, she would belt out songs with a force she described as “the hounds of hell.

What is the music like?

The film’s songs attributed to Mother Mary were composed by Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff for their initial collaboration. They created the music post-filming, which allowed them to draw inspiration from Hathaway’s solo barn dance performance. As Charli described to Vogue, “Anne’s movements were extremely expressive, wildly energetic, and brash in a magical yet terrifying manner.” This inspired us, so Jack and I brainstormed about that energy.

Who is in the cast?

Beyond Hathaway and Coel, the movie also showcases Hunter Schafer as Mother Mary’s assistant. Alongside them are Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay from Downton Abbey, Sian Clifford from Fleabag, and FKA Twigs, who have roles yet to be fully defined. What has been revealed is that the entire cast shares a strong bond – choreographer Dani Vitale described filming as if Lowery “unintentionally started a group with shared interests.

Have we seen anything yet?

As a film enthusiast, I was thrilled to get a sneak peek at “Mother Mary” and Celine Song’s “The Materialists,” both unveiled by A24 in November 2024. In the first glimpse, Anne Hathaway sparkled in gold, evoking the grandeur of Beyoncé’s 2017 Grammy performance. Indeed, she embodied the charisma of a pop star!

When does it come out?

At this moment, we don’t have a scheduled release date for the upcoming movie. Back in August 2024, director Lowery shared on the podcast The Last Video Store that he’s currently editing the film and was pondering over its identity. He stated, “I’m wondering, ‘What is this movie?'” implying his surprise at how unique it turned out to be. He further added, “I know what I aimed to create, and that’s exactly what I’ve made, but it’s so extraordinary. It’s a film I am confident will evoke intense feelings in every conceivable direction.” Since then, Lowery has not provided any additional updates about the project. Let’s take a peek at the barn!
