Nintendo Addresses Concerns Over Switch 2’s Price Keeping Kids From Getting It

The potential Nintendo Switch 2 could be priced lower compared to the PS5 and Xbox Series X, but at $450, it’s still considered costly. When the original Switch debuted at $300, that represents a significant increase in price, one that may be challenging for some consumers. During a recent investors call, concerns were raised about the higher price point of the Switch 2 compared to earlier consoles like the Famicom (known as the NES elsewhere). This potential high cost could potentially limit young children’s access to the console, an issue Nintendo acknowledged and directly addressed.

“We feel the cost of Nintendo Switch 2 reflects the gaming experience it delivers, and our primary focus is on offering enjoyable experiences that clearly show its value to consumers. To accomplish this aim, we’ve included numerous features in Nintendo Switch 2.”

It’s accurate that the Nintendo Switch 2 comes with a higher cost compared to our previous gaming devices. To encourage young children to interact with Nintendo characters and game environments, we’re developing alternative platforms outside our gaming systems. Our long-term aim is for these kids to eventually transition to using our gaming systems. We’re keeping a close eye on whether the system’s price could potentially hinder access.

Over the past few years, Nintendo has been actively venturing beyond game development, extending the reach of its beloved characters. This expansion includes movies like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, toy lines such as Lego sets, and themed zones across various Universal Studios locations.

It’s uncertain whether the cost of Switch 2 might persist as an issue; before release, Nintendo did voice concerns about it, but it turned out to be their best-selling console yet. Whether Nintendo adjusts the price based on sales performance is something we’ll have to wait and see.
